Vampire romance Thamma sparked excitement in Ayushmann Khurrana’s home, recalls director Aditya Sarpotdar

Aditya Sarpotdar, Director of Thamma, says actor Ayushmann Khurrana’s children were especially excited about the vampire themed story that blends romance, humour and mythology.

A supernatural love story forms the core of Thamma, a film directed by Aditya Sarpotdar that reinterprets the familiar Beauty and the Beast narrative through a contemporary lens.
The story blends romance with elements of mystery and mythology while examining ideas of beauty, vulnerability and the meaning of the “beast” within a modern setting. According to Sarpotdar, the casting of Ayushmann Khurrana was central to shaping the tone of the film.

Aditya Sarpotdar, Director of Thamma, said, “From the very beginning, he was my first and only choice. Ayushmann has an inherent emotional honesty that allows audiences to instantly connect with him, even in the most unconventional worlds. We needed an actor who could ground an out of the world narrative with sincerity and depth, and he does that effortlessly.”
The director also recalled how the film generated enthusiasm within Khurrana’s family.
Sarpotdar said, “What made this journey even more special was seeing the excitement within Ayushmann’s own home. He mentioned to me that his kids were incredibly excited for this film. There is a unique thrill children find in the vampire genre, especially seeing how horror and comedy come together.”

In the film, Ayushmann Khurrana plays Alok Goyal, a city based journalist whose life takes an unexpected turn when he falls in love with Tadaka, also known as Tarika, portrayed by actor Rashmika Mandanna.
Thamma is the fifth film in the Maddock Horror Comedy Universe, following titles such as Stree, Roohi, Bhediya, Munjya and Stree 2. The cinematic universe combines supernatural themes with humour while exploring relationships between its characters.
The film also features actors Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Paresh Rawal and Sathyaraj in key roles.
The film will be telecast during its World Television Premiere on Sony MAX on March 21 at 8 PM.
