Dr Yogesh Kumar, Senior Consultant Spine Care at SRM Global Hospitals, said the procedure involved a 32 week pregnancy with Cauda Equina Syndrome and multiple high risk conditions

Doctors at SRM Global Hospitals in Chennai performed a dual surgical procedure combining an emergency Caesarean section with spinal decompression to treat a serious neurological condition in a pregnant patient.
The patient, who was 32 weeks pregnant, was diagnosed with Cauda Equina Syndrome, a condition caused by severe nerve compression in the lower spine. This led to loss of mobility and loss of bladder and bowel control, requiring immediate medical intervention.

The medical team first carried out an emergency Caesarean section to safely deliver the baby. This was followed by spinal surgery to relieve pressure on the affected nerves and prevent permanent damage.
The procedure was led by Dr Yogesh Kumar, Senior Consultant Spine Care, along with Dr R K Vidhyalakshmi, Senior Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecology, Dr D Abinaya, Consultant Clinical Haematology, Dr Ashok C, Senior Consultant Neonatology and Dr Shanmitha R, Consultant Anaesthesiology.

The case involved multiple high risk conditions including obesity, diabetes, hypertension, hypothyroidism and antiphospholipid antibody syndrome, a blood clotting disorder requiring anticoagulation therapy.
Dr Yogesh Kumar, Senior Consultant Spine Care at SRM Global Hospitals, said, “This was a complex case involving multiple conditions. Managing surgical positioning, bleeding risk and medication across two procedures required careful coordination.”

Cauda Equina Syndrome is a medical emergency that requires immediate treatment to prevent long term complications including paralysis.
Dr P Sathyanarayanan, President of SRM Global Hospitals, said, “This outcome was possible due to coordinated efforts between obstetricians, spine surgeons, anaesthetists, haematologists and neonatal specialists.”
Following the surgery, the mother has regained her ability to walk, while the newborn remains stable under specialised care.
