Dr. K.S. Nayak, Director of Nephrology and Renal Transplant Services at Gleneagles Hospitals Lakdi-ka-pul, and Bharath Kanth Reddy R Y, Chief Executive Officer for the Chennai and Hyderabad Cluster of Gleneagles Hospitals, highlighted early detection, sustainable dialysis practices and kidney health awareness during World Kidney Day initiatives in Hyderabad.
Early detection of kidney disease and environmentally responsible treatment practices were highlighted during World Kidney Day 2026 initiatives at Gleneagles Hospitals Lakdi-ka-pul in Hyderabad.
The programme focused on improving awareness around kidney health, encouraging early screening for high risk individuals and promoting sustainable practices in resource intensive treatments such as dialysis. This year’s global theme, Kidney Health for All Caring for People Protecting the Planet, draws attention to the relationship between environmental health and kidney disease.
The Department of Nephrology at Gleneagles Hospitals Lakdi-ka-pul, led by Dr. K.S. Nayak, Dr. Chaitanya Varma and Dr. Ravi Kumar N, continues to expand its work across advanced kidney care, dialysis and renal transplantation services.
Dr. K.S. Nayak, Director of Nephrology and Renal Transplant Services at Gleneagles Hospitals Lakdi-ka-pul, said, “World Kidney Day has evolved from an awareness day into a global movement that calls for earlier detection, equitable access to care and more sustainable ways of treating kidney disease. Our focus extends beyond complex transplants and dialysis to prevention, patient education and reducing the environmental impact of treatment.”
Medical experts at the hospital also highlighted how climate conditions, environmental toxins and heat stress can contribute to kidney disease. Increasing awareness of these factors is seen as an important step in strengthening preventive healthcare and encouraging timely diagnosis.
Gleneagles Hospitals Lakdi-ka-pul has developed comprehensive kidney care programmes covering both acute and chronic kidney disease management through evidence based clinical protocols.
The hospital has performed more than 3,000 kidney transplants, including a large proportion involving diabetic and high risk patients. Its nephrology team has also introduced advanced procedures such as swap and ABO incompatible kidney transplants and carried out the country’s first interstate inter hospital swap kidney transplant.
The hospital also provides integrated transplant care through complex procedures including simultaneous liver and kidney transplantation for patients with multi organ complications.
Dialysis services at the hospital include haemodialysis, hemodiafiltration and peritoneal dialysis. Peritoneal dialysis can be initiated within two hours of catheter insertion and patients are also trained for home haemodialysis to improve independence and long term quality of life.
Critical care support includes advanced extracorporeal therapies such as plasmapheresis, continuous renal replacement therapy and hemoperfusion for patients with severe kidney complications.
Bharath Kanth Reddy R Y, Chief Executive Officer for the Chennai and Hyderabad Cluster of Gleneagles Hospitals, said, “Kidney care today is not only about advanced infrastructure and transplant programmes. It is also about using resources such as water and energy responsibly while delivering dialysis and transplant services. Our teams are working to make kidney care more patient centred, protocol driven and environmentally responsible.”
Aligned with the theme of World Kidney Day 2026, the hospital emphasised that protecting environmental health plays an important role in protecting kidney health and improving long term patient outcomes.
