Dr. Anupam Golash, Consultant, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at CK Birla Hospitals, CMRI, said early treatment can prevent complications, preserve mobility and improve quality of life.
CK Birla Hospitals, CMRI has launched Eastern India’s first dedicated Foot Care Clinic in Kolkata, aimed at patients with diabetic foot complications.
The clinic is led by Dr. Anupam Golash, Consultant, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, and will focus on early intervention, limb salvage, advanced wound care and prevention of amputations. It is described as only the third specialised clinic of its kind in the country.
Diabetic foot ulcers are a growing healthcare concern in India, where diabetes affects a large number of people. Such ulcers are often ignored in the early stages and can lead to severe infections, prolonged hospitalisation, disability and lower limb amputations.
Dr. Anupam Golash said, “Diabetic foot ulcers are not just wounds; they are indicators of a much larger underlying disease burden. Early detection and treatment can help prevent complications, preserve mobility, and significantly improve quality of life. Unfortunately, many patients seek treatment only after the condition has progressed to an advanced stage.”
The clinic will follow a multidisciplinary care model involving diabetologists, plastic and reconstructive surgeons, vascular specialists, interventional radiologists, wound care experts, nursing teams, physiotherapists and rehabilitation specialists.
The hospital said the approach will help patients receive care across diabetes control, vascular assessment, wound healing, rehabilitation and long term prevention.
The clinic will also focus on awareness and patient education. Many patients with diabetes develop neuropathy, which reduces sensation in the feet and increases the risk of unnoticed injuries, burns, infections and ulcers.
Dr. Golash said diabetic foot care requires regular monitoring and preventive habits. Patients will be guided on daily foot inspection, proper footwear, avoiding barefoot walking and seeking medical attention for even minor foot injuries.
The facility is expected to support patients from West Bengal, Bihar, Odisha, Jharkhand, Assam and the North East, where access to specialised diabetic foot care remains limited.
CK Birla Hospitals, CMRI said the clinic is intended to address a healthcare gap in Eastern India, reduce preventable amputations and improve outcomes for people living with diabetes.
CK Birla Hospital, CMRI is a NABH accredited multi specialty hospital established in Kolkata in 1969. The hospital has 440 beds and provides care across multiple specialties.
