Shri Arunkumar Pillai, CEO, NSDC, outlines credit-integrated global certification architecture targeting one million students over the next decade
Mumbai, February 27, 2026: India’s higher education architecture is undergoing structural recalibration as the National Skill Development Corporation aligns academic degrees with globally benchmarked certification pathways under its Centre for Future Skills framework.
Rather than positioning certifications as add-on short courses, the model integrates internationally recognised credentials directly into semester-based credit structures. Students earn two to three academic credits per term while simultaneously completing industry-aligned certification tracks, without extending the duration of their degree.
Currently operational across 12 institutions with over 43,000 trained candidates, the framework is projected to reach one million students over the next decade through a phased national rollout.
Shri Arunkumar Pillai, CEO, NSDC, described the model as a redesign of workforce preparation, embedding practical training and certification standards within mainstream academic programmes to ensure graduates are equipped with validated technical competencies upon completion.
The recent onboarding of the Federal Institute of Science and Technology (FISAT), Kochi, reflects the model’s continued institutional adoption. The centre is expected to enrol approximately 3,500 students per semester, supported by advanced laboratory infrastructure and physical mode delivery.
Through partnerships with global technology firms, students gain access to over 200 certification programmes across high-growth domains including software engineering, cloud computing and DevOps. Structured multi-semester pathways allow learners to accumulate four to six globally recognised certifications alongside their academic qualification.
NSDC refers to this framework as a Global Certification Stack, designed to improve labour market signalling, reduce employer retraining costs and position Indian graduates competitively within international talent markets.
The approach signals a shift from knowledge accumulation toward productivity validation, embedding measurable employability indicators within formal degree credentials
