Chennai Gets ZEISS Innovation Hub as IIT Madras Research Park Collaboration Expands

Andreas Pecher, President and CEO of the ZEISS Group, says Chennai hub will connect research with future technologies across optics, robotics and engineering

Chennai: ZEISS has launched the ZEISS Innovation Hub at IIT Madras Research Park in Chennai, expanding its research presence in India through a collaboration focused on technology development and academic engagement.
The hub is designed to bring together researchers, faculty, startups and industry participants from the ZEISS and IIT Madras Research Park ecosystems.
Its research areas will include advanced frugal engineering, harsh environment optics, robotics and fluid dynamics, with an emphasis on connecting research with industrial applications.

The inauguration was attended by Andreas Pecher, President and CEO of the ZEISS Group; Natarajan Malupillai, Group CEO, IIT Madras Research Park; Professor Ashok Jhunjhunwala, Founder, IIT Madras Research Park; Dr. Max Riedel, Head of Innovation Management, Corporate Research & Technology, ZEISS; Miguel Gonzalez Diaz, Managing Director, ZEISS India; Dhaval Radia, Chief Financial Officer, ZEISS India; and Dr. Oshin Behl, Head, ZEISS Innovation Hub Chennai.
The new facility will connect ZEISS’ global research network with the IIT Madras Research Park ecosystem. It will also support researcher exchanges, postgraduate research and engagement with IIT Madras students and graduates.
The hub will provide a setting for identifying technologies with potential applications, assessing their feasibility and developing research ideas towards solutions that can be applied at scale.

Andreas Pecher, President and CEO of the ZEISS Group, said the Chennai facility reflects the company’s interest in India’s research and technology ecosystem.
“The establishment of the ZEISS Innovation Hub in Chennai, India, reflects our confidence in the country’s rapidly evolving innovation ecosystem and its growing significance as a strategic market,” Pecher said.
“The dynamic ecosystem at IIT Madras Research Park provides an ideal platform to co-develop future-ready solutions and shape the next generation of technologies for India and the world,” he added.
The Chennai facility becomes part of ZEISS’ wider network of Innovation Hubs, which are intended to connect research with potential future applications.

Natarajan Malupillai, Group CEO, IITM Research Park & Incubation Cell, said the collaboration brings together ZEISS’ experience in optics, microscopy and engineering with the research environment at IIT Madras Research Park.
“The establishment of the ZEISS Innovation Hub at IIT Madras Research Park is a significant milestone for both our institutions,” Malupillai said.
“By joining hands, we have an opportunity to combine these complementary strengths to accelerate frontier research, develop globally competitive technologies to create a distinct innovation advantage that benefits both industry and society,” he added.
According to the information provided, the IIT Madras Research Park ecosystem currently brings together more than 250 research driven companies and labs, startups and Centres of Excellence.
The Research Park spans more than 11 acres with over 1.2 million square feet of workspace. It hosts more than 250 research driven companies and global corporations, 17 Centres of Excellence and over 580 startups across multiple sectors and technologies.
