The proposed campus in Singhasari SEZ will extend IIM Bangalore’s management education to learners across Indonesia and the wider ASEAN region.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced the establishment of an international campus of the Indian Institute of Management Bangalore in Indonesia, marking a significant milestone in educational cooperation between India and Indonesia.
The announcement was made during a joint press statement with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto in Jakarta following bilateral talks.
“We are going to establish a campus of India’s prestigious management institute, IIM Bangalore, in Indonesia, which will greatly benefit the youth across the entire ASEAN region,” Prime Minister Modi said.
The Prime Minister said India and Indonesia had signed an important agreement to strengthen technological cooperation among young people in areas including artificial intelligence, telecommunications and Digital Public Infrastructure, while also deepening collaboration between the startup ecosystems of both countries. He described these initiatives as the beginning of a “golden chapter” in India–Indonesia relations.
The proposed IIM Bangalore campus will serve learners from Indonesia and the broader ASEAN region, strengthening academic collaboration, executive education and leadership development while extending the institute’s management education model to international students.
The announcement follows the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between IIM Bangalore and the Singhasari Special Economic Zone, where the international campus is expected to be established.
The agreement was signed on July 6 at Indonesia’s Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs in Jakarta in the presence of Susiwijono Moegiarso, Secretary, Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs; Sandeep Chakravorty, Ambassador of India to Indonesia; Prof. U. Dinesh Kumar, Director in Charge, IIM Bangalore; KRAT David Santoso, Chief Executive Officer, SEZ Singhasari; and Prof. Jitamitra Desai, Professor and Member, Board of Governors, IIM Bangalore.
IIM Bangalore will introduce its programmes in two phases. The first phase will focus on short-duration Executive Education Programmes, followed by degree programmes in the second phase.
Prof. U. Dinesh Kumar said the collaboration would help build a strong leadership talent pool capable of leading organisations in Indonesia as well as multinational companies across the world.
Prof. Jitamitra Desai said, “With our significant strength in management education and research, IIM Bangalore is well positioned to deliver high-quality, high-reputation management programs and make Indonesia a global hub in business education.”
He added, “We believe that this program will lead to significantly improved employment opportunities for Indonesian citizens and expatriates alike and push the envelope in making the Global South region the preferred destination for both quality education and business leadership.”
The Singhasari campus will offer Executive Education Programmes for senior executives and professionals preparing for leadership positions. The curriculum will cover core management disciplines along with emerging areas such as artificial intelligence, digital transformation, global supply chains, climate and sustainability, and healthcare.
The initiative also aims to strengthen research collaborations, faculty development, consulting projects, policy partnerships, student exchanges and industry engagement across Indonesia and the wider ASEAN region.
As the designated nodal agency for management education on SWAYAM and a global provider of online learning, IIM Bangalore will also provide participants in Indonesia access to its repository of Massive Open Online Courses alongside classroom-based programmes.
IIM Bangalore acknowledged the support of the Governments of India and Indonesia in facilitating the establishment of the international campus.
