300 Women and Youth to Receive Clean Energy Training Through ReNew’s Project Surya in Andhra Pradesh

Vijaya Krishnan, District Collector and Magistrate, Anakapalli, and Vaishali Nigam Sinha, Co-founder of ReNew and Chairperson of ReNew Foundation, outline a three year partnership focused on solar technology skills and employment opportunities in the renewable energy sector.

ReNew and the Anakapalli District Administration have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to introduce Project Surya in the district, with an initial target of training 300 candidates, particularly women and young people, for employment opportunities in the renewable energy sector.
The agreement establishes a three year partnership focused on technical training, employability and livelihood development. Participants will receive instruction in solar energy, operations and maintenance, and other renewable energy technologies.
Under the agreement, ReNew will design and deliver the training programme, appoint qualified trainers, provide learning materials, conduct assessments and manage candidate screening and training.

The Anakapalli District Administration will assist with candidate mobilisation and provide suitable training facilities and basic amenities required for programme implementation.
The initiative is being introduced alongside ReNew’s expanding manufacturing operations in Andhra Pradesh. The company is establishing a 6.5 GW solar ingot and wafer manufacturing facility in Anakapalli district, involving an investment of INR 4,200 crore.
The facility forms part of ReNew’s broader investment plans of approximately INR 82,000 crore in Andhra Pradesh, announced last year. These plans also include a 2.8 GW hybrid renewable energy project at a single location in Anantapur district.

According to the company, the projects are expected to generate more than 3,600 direct and indirect employment opportunities in the state.
ReNew began operating in Andhra Pradesh in 2015 with the commissioning of a 24 MW wind project at Kalyandurg. Its current operational portfolio in the state includes 717 MW of wind capacity and 60 MW of solar capacity.
Beyond its energy operations, ReNew has undertaken community development activities in Andhra Pradesh. Over the past decade, the company has electrified 10 rural government schools and established 50 smart classrooms across five villages.
Its other initiatives include constructing school toilet facilities, installing reverse osmosis drinking water plants in 12 villages serving more than 10,000 people, and providing over 440 solar powered streetlights.

Project Surya was originally introduced in Gujarat in 2022 through a partnership involving ReNew, the United Nations Environment Programme and the Self Employed Women’s Association.
The programme initially trained women working in salt production to become solar technicians. It subsequently expanded to other communities, including women from coal mining communities in Dhanbad.
As of the financial year 2025 to 2026, Project Surya had trained 728 women as solar technicians.
Speaking at the agreement signing, Vijaya Krishnan, District Collector & Magistrate, Anakapalli, said, “It gives me immense pleasure to be present on the occasion of signing the MOU with Renew for commencement of a skill training programme for the youth of Anakapalli District, with a special focus on empowering women. This initiative is an important step towards creating a skilled and employable workforce within the district. Skill development is not merely about providing training; it is about creating opportunities for sustainable employment, economic independence and a better future for our youth.”

Vaishali Nigam Sinha, ReNew’s co-founder and Chairperson of ReNew Foundation, said, “India’s clean-energy transition will create opportunities not only through new infrastructure and manufacturing, but also through the skills and livelihoods that emerge around this ecosystem. Project Surya is our effort to ensure that women are able to participate meaningfully in this transition. Through our partnership with the Anakapalli District Administration, we hope to equip young people, particularly women, with relevant skills and create pathways towards greater economic opportunity in the clean-energy sector.”
The agreement will remain in effect for three years, during which ReNew and the district administration will jointly coordinate candidate mobilisation, training and programme implementation.
