New skilling initiatives unveiled as India marks World Youth Skills Day 2026
World Youth Skills Day 2026 saw the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship announce new skilling initiatives, including a proposed ₹530 crore Skills Outcomes Fund, IndiaSkills Competition guidelines, Centres of Excellence framework and programmes aimed at strengthening workforce readiness and women's participation.

The Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship introduced the IndiaSkills Competition 2026 to 2027 Guidelines, a proposed Skills Outcomes Fund of about ₹530 crore and new Centres of Excellence guidelines, while Shri Jayant Chaudhary said continuous learning, adaptability and innovation will shape India’s future workforce.

The Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship marked World Youth Skills Day 2026 by announcing a series of initiatives aimed at expanding India’s future ready skilling ecosystem, including new competition guidelines, industry focused training programmes, gender inclusion measures and an outcomes based funding platform.
Addressing the event at Kaushal Bhawan in New Delhi, Shri Jayant Chaudhary, Minister of State with Independent Charge for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship and Minister of State for Education, Government of India, said lifelong learning, adaptability and innovation will remain essential as the nature of work continues to evolve.

“The future belongs to those who continue to learn, adapt and innovate. India’s youth must be prepared not only for today’s jobs, but also for tomorrow’s opportunities,” Shri Jayant Chaudhary said.
The Minister said initiatives such as IndiaSkills, Centres of Excellence, apprenticeships and stronger industry partnerships are intended to create opportunities for young people in India and overseas while encouraging greater participation of women in non traditional sectors.
During the programme, the Ministry released the IndiaSkills Competition 2026 to 2027 Guidelines, outlining the roadmap for India’s national skills competition across 63 industry relevant categories. Registrations for participants have opened on the Skill India Digital Hub.

The Ministry also launched the WorldSkills India Champions Club, a mentoring platform that will bring together previous IndiaSkills and WorldSkills champions to guide aspiring competitors and promote vocational excellence.
India’s medal winners from the Global Skills Challenge Australia 2026 and the Taipei Capital Cup 2026 were felicitated after securing three gold medals, three silver medals, one bronze medal and three merit awards.
Guidelines for establishing Centres of Excellence under Skill India were also released to support industry aligned training facilities equipped with modern infrastructure, advanced technologies and stronger industry partnerships.

Among the major announcements was the launch of a Training Programme for Multi Skilled Caregivers under the Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana. The programme follows the Union Budget 2026 to 2027 announcement to skill 1.5 lakh caregivers, including 1.3 lakh candidates through the Ministry’s skilling ecosystem to support healthcare, geriatric care and home based care services.
The Ministry also announced the extension of the Pilot Project for Apprenticeship Engagement under the National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme in the North Eastern Region to strengthen workplace based learning and expand industry participation.

Debashree Mukherjee, Secretary, Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, said, “Over the past 11 years, Skill India has evolved into a connected national ecosystem built through partnerships with States, industry and training institutions, empowering more than six crore youth. As we enter the next phase, our focus must move from scale to quality, relevance and outcomes. The theme Skills for a Shared Future also reminds us that women and girls must remain central to India’s growth story.”

The Ministry also announced the formation of a Committee on Gender Mainstreaming to address barriers affecting women’s participation across the skilling and employment ecosystem. A Best Practices Compendium on Skilling and Employment for Women will also invite entries from government departments, industry, training institutions, corporate social responsibility organisations and civil society from July 20, 2026.
Another key announcement was the proposed Skills Outcomes Fund, an outcomes based financing platform of about ₹530 crore that will combine government funding, corporate social responsibility contributions and philanthropic support to provide industry aligned skilling, employment and livelihood opportunities for more than two lakh young people.
The event also witnessed the exchange of two memoranda of understanding, one between the Ministry and the National Skill Development Corporation for establishing the Fund, and another between the National Skill Development Corporation and the British Asian India Foundation for developing the India Skills Outcomes Platform.
The design of the proposed sculpture titled Skilled India, Empowered India, A Collective Growth Story was also unveiled. Skilled women learners from the Chaudhary Ajit Singh Centre of Excellence for Design and Fashion Technology in Baghpat, Uttar Pradesh, were felicitated after the centre trained its first batch of 50 women as advanced Sewing Machine Operators through industry aligned programmes integrating modern technologies and artificial intelligence enabled learning.
