Vishal Chaturvedi’s Neem Karoli Baba drama collected Rs 3.20 crore in its third weekend as its screen count recovered from 40 to around 400
Hanuman Ansh has recorded a sharp box office turnaround in its third weekend, collecting Rs 3.20 crore from Friday to Sunday after spending its first two weeks with relatively limited collections.
The devotional drama, which was released on August 7, has now collected Rs 4.55 crore net in India over 17 days. Its gross collection stands at Rs 5.36 crore.
The third weekend saw collections accelerate significantly across three days.
Hanuman Ansh collected Rs 15 lakh on Friday before rising to Rs 87 lakh on Saturday. Sunday delivered the film’s highest single day collection so far at Rs 2.18 crore.
The Sunday figure was more than double the combined collections recorded on Friday and Saturday.
The performance marks a significant change from the film’s first two weeks in cinemas.
Hanuman Ansh collected Rs 89 lakh during its opening week while playing across approximately 200 screens. Collections declined to Rs 46 lakh during the second week as its screen count dropped to around 40.
Its Rs 3.20 crore third weekend collection represents an increase of approximately 595% compared with the entire second week collection.
The renewed audience response has also resulted in exhibitors increasing the film’s presence. Hanuman Ansh is now playing across approximately 400 screens, twice its opening week count and considerably above the 40 screens available during its second week.
The film is based on the life of Neem Karoli Baba, also known among followers as Maharaj ji.
His following extends beyond India. The material provided for the film notes his association with several internationally known personalities over the years.
Steve Jobs travelled to India in 1974 hoping to meet Neem Karoli Baba but arrived after his death in Vrindavan.
During a 2015 town hall with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Mark Zuckerberg spoke about Jobs recommending that he visit a temple in India during a difficult period for Facebook.
Julia Roberts has spoken about how seeing a photograph of Neem Karoli Baba influenced her interest in Hinduism, while Jack Dorsey and eBay Co Founder Jeff Skoll have visited the Kainchi Dham ashram in the Kumaon hills.
Trade analyst Taran Adarsh, who has been tracking Hanuman Ansh, pointed to low occupancies during the first two weeks before identifying the third weekend as the film’s turnaround period, with word of mouth contributing to its performance.
Audience recommendations and community participation have also contributed to the film’s wider reach. Viewers have been recommending the film within their personal circles, while community groups in several cities have independently booked shows.
The resulting demand contributed to additional screens being made available for the film.
The performance follows a pattern previously seen with devotional films that gathered momentum after relatively quiet opening periods. Laalo Krishna Sada Sahaayate followed a similar trajectory last year after remaining subdued for much of its initial run before gaining traction.
Hanuman Ansh recorded its third weekend growth while Awarapan 2 continued its theatrical run and advance bookings for Toxic began building.
Vishal Chaturvedi, writer and director of Hanuman Ansh, attributed the film’s later momentum to recommendations from viewers rather than continued marketing expenditure.
“Whatever marketing we had ran its course in the first few days after release. Everything that has happened since then has happened because somebody watched the film and told somebody else to watch it,” Chaturvedi said.
He added, “The devotee base is a large one and they have carried it into their own circles. But devotees will only promote something if the content is good enough. If the film had not held up, no amount of goodwill would have brought us a third weekend like this.”
Written and directed by Vishal Chaturvedi, Hanuman Ansh stars Chandan Anand and Shobhinaw Satyaa and is based on the life of Neem Karoli Baba.
With its screen count now at approximately 400 and third weekend collections exceeding those of its first two weeks, the film enters its fourth week with renewed theatrical momentum.
