During the session, dermatology specialists explained that vitiligo is an autoimmune skin disorder in which the immune system attacks melanocytes, the cells responsible for producing skin pigment, resulting in clearly defined white patches on the skin. The experts emphasised that the condition is not contagious and should not be associated with myths, misconceptions or social stigma.
The speakers highlighted that seeking medical consultation soon after the appearance of white patches can help slow disease progression, reduce the formation of new lesions and improve the chances of successful repigmentation. Early diagnosis and treatment can also reduce the need for advanced therapies while helping patients manage the emotional challenges that may accompany the condition, including anxiety, low self esteem and social isolation.
Delivering the special guest lecture on Recent Advances in Diagnosis and Management of Vitiligo, Dr. Anuja Rao, Associate Professor, Government Institute of Medical Sciences, Greater Noida, discussed evolving diagnostic techniques and treatment approaches that are contributing to improved patient care. The academic session was followed by a presentation from Dr. Azra, Postgraduate Resident, Department of Dermatology, Noida International Institute of Medical Sciences, who spoke about recent therapeutic developments and available management options for vitiligo.
