From Concept to Command: Renault Appoints Sandeep Bhambra and Dr. Vikraman to Drive India’s Design & Engineering Vision

The new leadership reinforces India’s pivotal role in Renault’s global R&D strategy, spanning design, testing, digital architecture, and future mobility innovation.

Renault Group has announced key leadership appointments in India, strengthening its vision to position the country as a hub for global automotive innovation. Sandeep Bhambra has been appointed Head of Renault Design India, while Dr. Vikraman Subramanian will serve as Head of Engineering at Renault Nissan Technology & Business Centre India (RNTBCI).
The appointments come at a strategic moment, as India becomes increasingly central to Renault’s global product pipeline not only in terms of cost efficiency and volume, but also as a source of innovation in future mobility, platform architecture, and software-defined vehicles.

Sandeep Bhambra, a seasoned design leader with experience at the Renault Design Studio in France, returns to India to helm Renault Design India. He brings over two decades of design expertise across passenger vehicles and advanced concept projects. His new mandate includes leading exterior and interior design for India-centric as well as global models. Renault Design India, located in Chennai, is one of four global design centers and plays a key role in concept development and adaptation for emerging markets.
Dr. Vikraman, with over 20 years of engineering experience across powertrain, vehicle architecture, and systems integration, will head the engineering function at RNTBCI one of Renault’s largest tech hubs outside France. His leadership will span full vehicle development, regulatory compliance, embedded systems, and collaborative platform work with Nissan under the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance.

India’s Expanding Role in Renault’s Global Strategy
These leadership moves are part of a broader recalibration under Renault’s international strategy, which seeks to diversify its engineering and design base while leveraging India’s digital and manufacturing ecosystems. India is not just a manufacturing base for Renault; it is increasingly seen as a launchpad for mobility solutions relevant to both domestic and global markets.
RNTBCI, which employs over 7,000 people, is central to Renault’s activities in digital engineering, vehicle testing, and software innovation including in areas like advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS), infotainment, and connectivity.

What This Means for the Market
For India, these appointments reaffirm Renault’s long-term investment in local talent and capability building. They also come as the company is reportedly preparing next-gen models tailored to Indian consumer preferences, regulatory frameworks, and infrastructure realities while ensuring global scalability.
The announcement underscores a growing industry trend where India, once seen primarily as a small-car market, is now a critical node in global design and engineering networks.
