Financial Technology Innovators Invited as GIFT City and IIT Gandhinagar Announce FutureLab Grand Challenge 2026
GIFT City and IIT Gandhinagar have announced the FutureLab Grand Challenge 2026 to 2027, inviting students and researchers to submit financial technology innovations by November 12. Approximately 10 to 12 teams are expected to reach the Grand Finale.

Applications close on November 12, 2026, with approximately 10 to 12 teams expected to reach the Grand Finale at IIT Gandhinagar. The competition will explore financial technology, cybersecurity, digital assets and other emerging technologies ahead of the Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit 2027.

GIFT City, in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar (IITGN), has announced the GIFT FutureLab Grand Challenge 2026 to 2027, a national innovation competition focused on identifying technology and research ideas with potential applications in financial services.
The initiative is being organised ahead of the Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit 2027 and aims to connect promising innovations with practical requirements within the financial sector and the wider GIFT City ecosystem.
The competition will primarily invite participation from students and researchers studying at technical, management and other higher education institutions across India.
Applicants can participate individually or form teams to submit their proposals.
Rather than limiting submissions to specific technology categories, the organisers are seeking original ideas supported by technical merit and a credible route towards practical implementation.

Focus on Emerging Financial Technologies
The Grand Challenge will consider innovations addressing a range of technological opportunities and operational requirements in financial services.
Indicative areas include intelligent and autonomous financial systems, digital assets, programmable finance and quantum ready financial infrastructure.
Other areas of interest include cybersecurity, fraud detection and risk management, regulatory technology and future financial infrastructure.
The competition will also consider emerging technologies relevant to financial services and the GIFT City ecosystem beyond these indicative categories.

The emphasis will be on identifying solutions that combine technical originality with potential real world applications.
Applications Open Until November 12
The application window will remain open until November 12, 2026.
The initial submission and evaluation stages will take place online, allowing eligible participants from institutions across India to apply without attending an initial physical screening.
Applications will be evaluated on six principal considerations: novelty, technical merit, relevance to financial services, feasibility, potential impact and prospects for commercialisation.
These criteria are intended to identify ideas that demonstrate both research value and a practical route towards implementation.
Approximately 10 to 12 shortlisted teams will be invited to participate in an offline Grand Finale at IIT Gandhinagar.
The finale is proposed to take place by December 20, 2026.
During the event, finalists will present their innovations before a jury comprising representatives and experts from academia, technology, financial services, industry and the GIFT City ecosystem.

Potential Industry Collaboration
Beyond the competition, GIFT City intends to facilitate interactions between selected teams and organisations operating within the financial services ecosystem.
These may include banks, financial institutions, fintech companies and other relevant industry partners.
Depending on the suitability of the proposed innovations and interest from participating stakeholders, the discussions could create opportunities for technology validation, pilot deployment, research collaboration or commercialisation.
However, these opportunities will depend on the relevance of individual proposals and the willingness of potential partners to engage.
The competition will also provide a possible route for selected innovations to gain visibility at future industry events.
The top three teams may receive an opportunity to present their work at an appropriate GIFT City or Vibrant Gujarat platform in January 2027.
This proposed opportunity will depend on the availability and suitability of the relevant platform.
Connecting Research With Financial Services
The collaboration between GIFT City and IIT Gandhinagar is intended to encourage students and researchers to develop solutions addressing technological requirements in financial services.
By inviting applications from different academic disciplines, the competition aims to attract a broad range of approaches to challenges involving financial infrastructure, digital systems, security and regulatory processes.
The organisers are also seeking ideas with potential for further development beyond the competition itself.
The Grand Challenge is scheduled to progress from online applications and evaluations to an in person finale at IIT Gandhinagar, followed by possible industry engagement for selected innovations.
With applications closing on November 12, the initiative provides a national platform for students and researchers seeking to present original financial technology ideas ahead of the Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit 2027.
