Dr Ranveer Singh Rana of HCG Ranchi Highlights Growing Risk of Rare and Silent Cancers in India

Consultant surgical oncologist urges early evaluation of persistent symptoms to prevent delayed diagnosis

Ranchi, February 24, 2026: Rare and silent cancers continue to pose a serious public health challenge in India, largely due to delayed diagnosis caused by subtle and easily overlooked symptoms, says Dr Ranveer Singh Rana, Consultant Surgical Oncology at HCG Abdur Razzaque Ansari Cancer Hospital, Ranchi.
Unlike cancers that present with visible warning signs in the early stages, silent cancers often develop in organs that do not immediately produce obvious symptoms. Cancers affecting the bile duct, gallbladder, pancreas, ovaries and certain blood cancers may initially manifest as fatigue, mild abdominal discomfort, unexplained weight loss or digestive disturbances. These symptoms are frequently mistaken for routine lifestyle issues or stress related conditions.

According to clinical observations and data from national cancer registries, a significant number of cases in India are diagnosed at advanced stages. The delay is often not due to lack of access to treatment but due to the subtle nature of early warning signs.
Dr Rana explains that persistent symptoms lasting several weeks, recurring abdominal discomfort, unexplained loss of appetite or changes in digestion should not be ignored. In some cases, jaundice appears only after internal obstruction has developed, by which time disease progression may already be significant.

Risk factors commonly associated with silent cancers include long standing inflammation, untreated gallstones, chronic liver conditions, hormonal imbalances and tobacco use. Sedentary lifestyles, rising obesity rates and irregular dietary patterns are also contributing factors observed among younger populations.
Beyond physical impact, delayed diagnosis carries significant emotional and financial strain for families. Caregivers often recall early warning signs that were dismissed as minor ailments. Early consultation and diagnostic evaluation, Dr Rana notes, can significantly improve treatment planning and quality of life.

He emphasises that regular health checkups, especially for individuals with known risk factors, can aid early detection. Modern imaging and blood diagnostics have improved the ability to identify abnormalities before they become aggressive.
Preventive measures remain straightforward: balanced nutrition, physical activity, avoidance of tobacco, management of chronic conditions and timely follow up of abnormal test results.
“Silent cancers may not present dramatically, but the body often sends subtle signals,” says Dr Rana. “Recognising these early can change outcomes and reduce long term impact on families.”
