Senior Consultant Radiation Oncology at HCG MNR Cancer Hospital Ongole highlights lifestyle risks, screening importance, and advances in personalised treatment

Chennai, February 19, 2026: Marking World Cancer Day 2026, Dr R V Raghunandan, Senior Consultant Radiation Oncology at HCG MNR Cancer Hospital, Ongole, called for greater awareness, early detection, and preventive healthcare practices to address India’s rising cancer burden.
Dr Raghunandan noted that conversations around cancer are increasingly visible across homes, workplaces, and educational institutions. He stated that while the disease remains a serious public health concern, it is not always sudden or unpredictable. In many instances, early warning signs appear, and timely diagnosis can significantly improve treatment outcomes.

India continues to witness a steady rise in cancer diagnoses, influenced by longer life expectancy, lifestyle shifts, environmental exposure, and delayed medical consultation. Research and registry data across the country indicate that a substantial proportion of cancers are preventable or manageable when detected early. However, fear, misinformation, and stigma often delay screening and medical evaluation.
According to Dr Raghunandan, cancer typically develops due to a combination of genetic predisposition, environmental factors, and everyday habits. Tobacco consumption remains a leading contributor, along with unhealthy dietary patterns, lack of physical activity, excessive alcohol use, and prolonged exposure to pollution. Among younger working populations, sedentary routines, irregular eating habits, and chronic stress are emerging concerns.

He highlighted the importance of screening for common cancers affecting the breast, cervix, oral cavity, and colon. Recognising warning signs such as unexplained weight loss, persistent pain, unusual lumps, changes in bowel habits, or non healing sores can enable earlier intervention and improved recovery prospects.
Dr Raghunandan also pointed to advancements in diagnostics, surgical methods, radiation techniques, and targeted therapies that have improved treatment precision and reduced side effects. Cancer care today increasingly integrates clinical management with emotional and psychological support, recognising the broader needs of patients and families.

Prevention remains central to reducing long term cancer incidence. Regular physical activity, balanced nutrition rich in fruits and vegetables, avoidance of tobacco in all forms, moderation in alcohol intake, vaccination where appropriate, and periodic health check ups contribute significantly to lowering risk.
Dr Raghunandan emphasised that seeking medical advice at the earliest sign of concern reflects responsibility rather than fear. He stated that World Cancer Day serves as a reminder that informed awareness, timely action, and consistent preventive practices can reshape the national conversation around cancer from uncertainty to preparedness.
