From full-screen map mirroring to a 13,200-ft ride to Shipki La, Greaves Electric Mobility’s flagship scooter redefines real-world EV performance and digital intelligence.
On the occasion of World EV Day, celebrated annually on September 9 to promote sustainable mobility, Greaves Electric Mobility marked a milestone in the Indian two-wheeler industry. Its flagship high-speed electric scooter, Ampere Nexus, demonstrated that cutting-edge EV technology no longer belongs only to concept stages or luxury segments. It now belongs on the streets and even in the mountains.
With a bold real-world ascent to Shipki La Pass, nestled at over 13,200 feet in Himachal Pradesh and bordering Tibet, Ampere Nexus proved that Indian electric scooters are ready for terrain previously dominated by petrol engines. This journey wasn’t just symbolic. It was backed by robust performance on steep inclines, temperature variability, and altitude effects a true test for lithium-ion battery systems and permanent magnet motors in unpredictable environments.
But Ampere Nexus isn’t just built for extremes. It’s designed for the everyday rider. In cities like Bengaluru, Mumbai, and Hyderabad, the scooter integrates seamlessly with modern digital needs. Featuring full-screen map mirroring, Bluetooth telephony, riding modes, and regenerative braking, Nexus is effectively a smart device on wheels. It addresses key urban rider concerns: battery reliability, range confidence, and intelligent interactivity a space previously under-addressed in India’s mid-range EV segment.
Greaves Electric Mobility, a division of Greaves Cotton, has steadily evolved from being a legacy auto components company to one of India’s most influential names in sustainable mobility. With over 300,000 Ampere scooters sold to date and a growing nationwide charging and service ecosystem, the company is now among the most active enablers of India’s shift from ICE to electric in the two-wheeler segment.
Ampere Nexus, launched earlier in 2024, is Greaves’ answer to both commuter convenience and aspiration. With a certified range of 136 km and top speed nearing 90 km/h, it is aimed at working professionals, students, and delivery partners alike users who need consistent, comfortable, and low-cost transport. It runs on the high-performance G-Finesse platform, equipped with a mid-mounted motor, and an IP67-rated battery pack suited for both dry and monsoon conditions.
But what truly sets Nexus apart is its rider intelligence. With smartphone integration, over-the-air updates, real-time diagnostics, and navigation features, the scooter represents the confluence of IoT and mobility what the industry increasingly calls “connected EVs.” These features aren’t luxuries anymore. For the urban Indian rider navigating traffic, deadlines, and unpredictable infrastructure, they are necessities.
During the recent Shipki La ascent, Greaves released behind-the-scenes footage showcasing the scooter climbing rugged Himalayan trails without fossil fuel assistance. Local communities and riders participated in demo rides, showcasing the bike’s terrain adaptability. What was traditionally considered a petrol-only belt was reintroduced to clean mobility — without range anxiety.
Sanjay Behl, CEO and Executive Director of Greaves Electric Mobility, stated that the mission was never just to create an electric scooter but to create a connected, practical, and aspirational two-wheeler that makes EV adoption a no-compromise decision. “We want electric to be the first choice, not the alternate,” he emphasized in earlier interviews.
The Nexus campaign ties into the Indian government’s larger FAME II policy and EV30@30 initiative, which aims for electric vehicles to make up 30% of new vehicle sales by 2030. Nexus contributes directly to this mission by removing barriers to adoption whether technological, infrastructural, or aspirational.
Another key focus for Greaves is accessibility. While many EV brands chase top-tier pricing, Ampere has focused on bringing value to India’s largest consumer base the working middle class. Through financial partnerships with SBI, Bajaj Finance, and other NBFCs, the Nexus is available with zero down payment and monthly EMIs as low as ₹2,999. Combined with low running costs and government subsidies in select states, ownership becomes significantly more affordable than ICE alternatives.
Charging infrastructure continues to be a challenge across Indian cities, and Greaves has responded with both home-charging and community charging solutions. Its collaboration with Bounce Infinity, ChargeZone, and other EV infra startups further extends the usability of Ampere scooters beyond metro zones.
What stands out about the Ampere Nexus rollout is the brand’s shift toward lifestyle positioning. This isn’t just about going electric, it’s about rethinking the scooter as a mobility partner. Social media campaigns highlight young riders using Nexus for everything from daily office commutes to long weekend rides in the Western Ghats. Influencer tie-ups, university trials, and even curated rural test rides have positioned Nexus as India’s most relatable EV in 2025.
Unlike legacy petrol models that sold on engine specs and mileage, Nexus is selling on confidence range accuracy, battery safety, digital utility, and design ergonomics. And it’s working. In Q1 FY25, Greaves Electric Mobility reported a 34% increase in YoY sales for Ampere scooters, led by Nexus demand. The scooter now contributes to over 60% of the brand’s monthly revenue, with customer reviews reflecting satisfaction with stability, build quality, and after-sales service.
With World EV Day as the backdrop, the message is clear: electric mobility in India has moved from experimentation to execution. The Ampere Nexus is not just proof of concept. It is proof of transformation of how one Indian company, rooted in a 165-year-old legacy, is ready for the next century of transportation.
