Breast Cancer Management Advances Take Centre Stage at SRM Medical College CME in Chennai

The two day programme on October 30 and 31 brings together oncology specialists and academicians to discuss breast conservation, oncoplastic surgery and evolving treatment approaches. Dr. R. Jayanthi, Dean (Medical), and Dr. R. Venkatraman, Medical Superintendent, SRM Medical College Hospital & Research Centre, emphasised public awareness and expanded screening initiatives.

SRM Medical College Hospital & Research Centre (SRMMCHRC), part of SRM Institute of Science and Technology, Kattankulathur, inaugurated a two day Continuing Medical Education (CME) programme on Contemporary Breast Cancer Management as part of SRM Pink October 2026.
The inaugural ceremony took place on October 30 at the Hippocrates Auditorium, SRM Medical College Building, Kattankulathur. The programme is being held on October 30 and 31 during Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
Jointly organised by the Departments of General Surgery and Surgical Oncology, the CME brings together medical professionals, specialists and academicians to discuss recent developments in breast cancer treatment and the growing importance of multidisciplinary care.

The programme follows the theme Preserve, Reshape, De-escalate, Optimise, with discussions focusing on treatment approaches that aim to improve clinical outcomes while considering individual patient needs.
Dr. Shashanka Mohan Bose, Chairman, Academic Committee, Council of NAMS, and former Senior Professor and Head of the Department of Surgery, PGI, Chandigarh, attended the inaugural function as Chief Guest.
Addressing the gathering, Dr. R. Jayanthi, Dean (Medical), SRM Medical College Hospital & Research Centre, highlighted the importance of extending breast cancer awareness beyond hospitals and medical institutions.
She said, “every one of us must act as a social ambassador for sensitising the public in early detection of breast cancer, spreading awareness among our families and communities, and encouraging women to prioritise self-breast examination.”

Her remarks focused on the role of healthcare professionals and community members in encouraging awareness and timely medical consultation.
Dr. R. Venkatraman, Medical Superintendent, SRM Medical College Hospital & Research Centre, outlined plans to extend breast cancer screening awareness and access across the institution.
He said, “we aim to expand our screening initiatives across all faculties and employees of SRM IST, creating greater awareness and ensuring access to appropriate screening methods for the well-being of our entire community.”
The programme also featured a specialised session on oncoplastic surgery by Dr. Veda Padma Priya, Senior Consultant, Breast Oncology, MGM Cancer Institute, Chennai.

Her session, titled Shaping the Breast: The Art & Science of Oncoplastic Surgery, Masterclass & Demonstration, examined surgical approaches that combine cancer treatment with techniques intended to preserve or restore breast appearance.
The scientific programme includes expert lectures, surgical video masterclasses, multidisciplinary discussions and updates based on clinical evidence.
Key subjects include locally advanced breast cancer, breast conservation, oncoplastic surgery, surgical techniques and axillary de-escalation strategies.
The discussions address evolving approaches to breast cancer management, including the selection of appropriate surgical procedures and the role of different specialties in treatment planning.
National and institutional faculty members are participating in the CME, providing opportunities for medical professionals to exchange clinical knowledge and discuss current practices.

The programme also places emphasis on patient centred care, with sessions examining how treatment decisions can account for both clinical requirements and individual patient circumstances.
Organisers said the initiative forms part of SRM Pink October 2026, which focuses on breast cancer awareness, early detection and developments in cancer care.
Through the CME, SRM Medical College Hospital & Research Centre aims to encourage continued professional learning while promoting wider awareness of breast health and appropriate screening.
The two day programme brings together academic discussion and clinical perspectives on breast cancer management, with particular attention to breast conservation, surgical advances and coordinated patient care.
