10 Bike Ambulances Take Kauvery Hospital Emergency Response Closer to Patients Across Chennai

Emergency medical support in Chennai is moving closer to patients with Kauvery Hospital deploying 10 bike ambulances designed to provide first response care while conventional ambulances are coordinated for further treatment and transportation.
Introduced under the Kauvery First Responders initiative, the bike ambulances have been deployed across the hospital’s Alwarpet, Vadapalani, Radial Road and Maa Kauvery locations.
The network is intended to help trained medical responders reach emergency scenes quickly, particularly when traffic congestion or road accessibility could delay larger emergency vehicles.

The bike ambulances are not designed to transport patients. Instead, trained medical responders can assess patients and provide appropriate first response care at the scene while coordinating with Kauvery Hospital and conventional ambulance services for subsequent management and transportation when required.
Each bike carries an Automated External Defibrillator, oxygen support and an emergency medical kit.
In cases of suspected cardiac arrest, the AED can analyse a patient’s heart rhythm and deliver an electrical shock when indicated. Responders can administer oxygen when clinically appropriate and use the emergency medical kit for immediate assessment and care according to established protocols.

The bikes also form part of a connected emergency care system. They are equipped with 5G connectivity, webcams and GPS with live tracking, allowing responders at the scene to remain connected with the hospital team and coordinate the transition to further care.

The initiative was introduced at an event attended by Thiru P. Pakalavan, IPS, Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic – South), Chennai, as Chief Guest.

We wanted to create a system that works around this reality and brings medical assistance closer to the point where it is needed.”

Explaining the role of the service, he added, “It is not about replacing the ambulance; it is about making sure that the wait for an ambulance does not also mean a wait for the first response.”

Kauvery Hospital already operates an emergency ambulance network in Chennai with 5G enabled ambulances that support real time patient monitoring and remote clinical guidance during transportation. The bike ambulances add an initial response component intended to reach patients before transportation begins.
