Dr Bornali Datta, Director, Respiratory & Sleep Medicine, Medanta Gurugram, draws on 27 years of clinical and public health experience to explain asthma, COPD, lung cancer, sleep apnoea and other respiratory conditions in Breathe: A Lesson in Lungs and Life.
Dr Bornali Datta, Director, Respiratory & Sleep Medicine, Medanta Gurugram, has launched her book Breathe: A Lesson in Lungs and Life, which explains respiratory health, common lung diseases and preventive care through patient stories and practical medical information.
Drawing on 27 years of experience in clinical medicine and public health, Dr Datta has written the book for patients, caregivers and readers who want to understand how their lungs function and what can affect respiratory health.
The publication addresses several respiratory conditions, including asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), lung cancer, COVID 19, sleep apnoea and tuberculosis.
Through accounts drawn from her medical practice, Dr Datta explains the causes, symptoms and treatment approaches associated with these conditions. The book also discusses the importance of recognising possible warning signs and seeking appropriate medical attention.
A central theme is the relationship between daily habits, environmental exposure and respiratory health.
The book examines the effects of cigarette smoking, vaping and air pollution, alongside topics such as physical activity, vaccination and travel. These subjects are presented through illustrations, personal observations and clinical experiences intended to make medical information easier to understand.
Dr Bornali Datta, Director, Respiratory & Sleep Medicine, Medanta Gurugram, said, “Breathing is something most of us take for granted until it becomes difficult. Through this book, I wanted to make understanding our lungs and the illnesses that affect them less intimidating and more accessible. My hope is that readers will be able to recognise important warning signs, ask informed questions and better understand the medical advice they receive. Ultimately, Breathe is about helping people appreciate and care for something fundamental to life—every breath we take.”
The book also considers the challenges patients may face when interpreting medical information, particularly as respiratory illnesses, pollution concerns and misleading health claims receive greater public attention.
Rather than focusing exclusively on medical terminology, Dr Datta uses experiences from patient care to explain how respiratory conditions can affect everyday life and why timely consultation matters.
Breathe: A Lesson in Lungs and Life is intended to help readers ask informed questions during medical consultations and better understand advice provided by healthcare professionals.
Dr Datta is a senior pulmonologist and public health professional who has been associated with Medanta since 2010.
Her previous book, In a Better Place: A Doctor’s Journey, was published by Bloomsbury India in 2022.
Medanta operates under Global Health Limited, a healthcare company founded by Dr Naresh Trehan, a cardiovascular and cardiothoracic surgeon and recipient of the Padma Bhushan, Padma Shri and Dr B. C. Roy Award.
The company operates six hospitals in Gurugram, Indore, Ranchi, Lucknow, Patna and Noida. As of June 30, 2026, its operational hospitals had 3,737 installed beds across 5.6 million sq. ft.
Global Health Limited also has five upcoming hospitals planned in Mumbai, Delhi’s Pitampura and South Delhi areas, Guwahati and Varanasi.
The Medanta network provides services across more than 30 medical specialties and has over 2,400 doctors.
With Breathe: A Lesson in Lungs and Life, Dr Datta seeks to make respiratory medicine more understandable to people managing lung conditions and those interested in protecting their respiratory health.
