Now pursuing a master’s in biomedical science with a neuroscience focus at Rutgers University, Harini Shanmugasundaram financed her studies through a student loan from Prodigy Finance.
London, March 2026: At a time when many international students were reconsidering their plans due to visa uncertainty and rising education costs, Harini Shanmugasundaram chose to pursue her research ambitions abroad.
The Chennai-based dentistry graduate is currently studying biomedical science with a concentration in neuroscience at Rutgers University in New Jersey. Her decision reflects a shift from a clinical career path to scientific research, inspired by the global response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
After completing her dentistry degree in Chennai in 2024, Harini began working as an intern at a government dental hospital in her hometown. While the internship followed a conventional path for dental graduates, her interest in research was steadily growing.
Observing the worldwide scientific collaboration during the pandemic had a lasting impact on her perspective. The speed at which researchers, governments and pharmaceutical companies worked together to develop treatments and vaccines sparked her curiosity about the broader role of research in healthcare.
“It was fascinating to see how scientists, governments and pharmaceutical companies came together to solve a real-world problem,” Harini said. “That’s when I realised healthcare is not only about clinical practice. There is a whole world of research that shapes the future of medicine.”
Motivated by that realization, she began exploring postgraduate programs in biomedical science. The United States emerged as her preferred destination because of its strong research ecosystem and biotechnology industry.
However, the timing was challenging. International students were facing uncertainty around visa policies, and discussions around research funding created additional concerns for those planning research-based programs.
Despite these uncertainties, Harini proceeded with her plans. Her admission and loan approval came shortly before a global pause on visa applications, allowing her to secure an appointment and complete the visa process.
Financial considerations were another important factor in her decision. Coming from a modest family background, Harini wanted to pursue her education without placing financial pressure on her parents.
She applied for an international student loan through Prodigy Finance and received approval within ten days, enabling her to move forward with her studies independently.
Sonal Kapoor, Global Chief Business Officer at Prodigy Finance, said stories like Harini’s reflect the determination many international students show while navigating financial and regulatory uncertainties.
“At Prodigy Finance, we believe talented students should not have to pause their dreams because of financial barriers,” Kapoor said.
Adjusting to life in a new country brought its own challenges. Harini had to adapt to a new academic system, cultural environment and the realities of living far from home.
Over time, she began to see these experiences as an important part of her personal and academic growth.
Looking ahead, Harini hopes to pursue a PhD and eventually establish a biotechnology company focused on developing solutions that improve healthcare outcomes. She also hopes to bring that innovation back to India in the future.
Her journey highlights how curiosity, determination and access to education financing can open pathways for students exploring research careers across borders.
