1994 Malayalam Classic Thenmavin Kombathu Returns in 4K as Prasad Corp and Matinee Now Restore Priyadarshan Film

Abhishek Prasad, Director & CTO, Prasad Corp, and Ajith Rajan, Managing Director, Matinee Now, detail the restoration of the Mohanlal and Shobana starrer from an original 35mm film print, with its worldwide theatrical return scheduled for October 1, 2026

Priyadarshan’s 1994 Malayalam film Thenmavin Kombathu is returning to theatres worldwide on October 1, 2026, following a 4K restoration undertaken by Prasad Corp in collaboration with Matinee Now.
Starring Mohanlal, Shobana, Nedumudi Venu, Pappu and Sreenivasan, the film has been prepared for its theatrical return with restored visuals and a new Dolby Atmos sound mix while retaining the character of the original work.
The restoration began with the original 35mm film print, which was scanned in 8K. The material was subsequently converted and restored in Super 4K resolution before the Dolby Atmos mix was completed.

Matinee Now oversaw the execution of the restoration in collaboration with Prasad Corp, bringing together film scanning, restoration and post production processes for the new theatrical version.

The restoration is intended to allow the film to be screened using contemporary theatrical formats without altering the visual identity and character associated with the original production.

The project also places attention on the use of contemporary scanning, restoration and sound technologies for preserving older Indian films and preparing them for current theatrical exhibition.

Prasad Corp, founded in 1956 by filmmaker Shri L. V. Prasad, works across film preservation, restoration and post production. According to information provided by the company, it has worked on more than 30,000 films and has over 1,100 professionals across India, USA, France, Philippines, Germany, Japan and Saudi Arabia.
The restored version of Thenmavin Kombathu will begin its worldwide theatrical run on October 1, 2026.
