Antoine Huard, CEO of Verso Energy, and Barry Glickman, Vice President of Honeywell Low Carbon Energy, outline production plans tied to the European Union requirement of 35 percent eSAF by 2050
Mumbai, February 25, 2026: Verso Energy will deploy Honeywell UOP’s eFining methanol to jet processing technology across seven planned electro sustainable aviation fuel production facilities in France, Finland and the United States. The sites are expected to deliver nearly 200 million gallons of eSAF annually as regulatory requirements tighten across major aviation markets.
Honeywell’s eFining technology converts carbon dioxide from biological sources, renewable electricity and hydrogen into electrofuels including eSAF. When blended with conventional jet fuel, the product functions as a direct replacement without requiring changes to aircraft systems or airport fuel infrastructure. According to Honeywell’s carbon intensity analysis derived from a third party study of methanol production using green hydrogen and carbon dioxide captured from biomass processing, the fuel can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 88 percent compared to fossil jet fuel.
Antoine Huard, CEO of Verso Energy, said efficient and cost effective eSAF production will be crucial for airlines working to comply with regional adoption requirements. He said the company’s standardized plant design combined with Honeywell’s sustainable aviation fuel technology will allow faster scale up of production and quicker supply to the market.
The expansion comes as the European Union’s ReFuel EU initiative mandates that aviation fuel suppliers ensure at least 35 percent of supply is eSAF by 2050. Verso Energy’s seven planned facilities are intended to support that transition while increasing overall global sustainable aviation fuel capacity.
Barry Glickman, Vice President of Honeywell Low Carbon Energy, said the company’s sustainable aviation fuel portfolio addresses cost and feedstock constraints in renewable fuel production. He said the eFining process enables companies to use widely available carbon dioxide as feedstock, supporting scalable and lower carbon output. He added that continued improvements in process technology are reducing cost premiums by improving plant scale, efficiency, utility consumption and project timelines.
Verso Energy has received EU Innovation Fund awards for its first two projects, DEZiR and ReSTart, which are expected to be among the first large scale European facilities dedicated exclusively to eSAF production. The DEZiR project has also secured funding from the French government and is scheduled to begin operations in 2030.
Honeywell’s renewable fuels portfolio also includes Ecofining, FT Unicracking, Biocrude Upgrading and Ethanol to Jet technologies designed to support feedstock flexibility in next generation fuel production.
