BAFTA spotlight turns to 11 Tareng as Lakshmipriya Devi wears Khurkhul silk ensemble for Boong victory

Lakshmipriya Devi, director of Manipuri film Boong, chooses 11 Tareng’s Lavender Grey design from the Phiruk collection, founded by Jayshree Koijam and Reena Ahanthem, for the 79th BAFTA Awards where the film won Best Children’s and Family Film

Lakshmipriya Devi, director of the Manipuri language film Boong, attended the 79th BAFTA Awards wearing an ensemble by 11 Tareng, as the film secured the award for Best Children’s and Family Film.
The look was drawn from 11 Tareng’s Phiruk collection and featured a Lavender Grey silhouette inspired by the traditional Phanek and Phee. The outfit included a draped top with set in sleeves, paired with a Phanek detailed with the temple motif in gold zari.

The fabric used for the ensemble was handwoven Khurkhul silk, crafted by skilled weavers in Khurkhul village in Manipur. The textile is known for its texture, fluid drape, and natural sheen.
11 Tareng was founded by Jayshree Koijam and Reena Ahanthem, graduates of the National Institute of Fashion Technology and Pearl Academy, New Delhi. After years of studying and working in Delhi, the founders returned to Manipur, drawing inspiration from the region’s weaving heritage and particularly from Khurkhul silk.

The label centres its work on the cultural identity embedded in handwoven textiles. While the brand states that it is not yet fully sustainable, it continues to adopt practices aimed at reducing its environmental footprint.
The appearance at the BAFTA Awards places Khurkhul silk and Manipuri design on an international red carpet platform, aligning regional craftsmanship with global recognition in cinema.
