Dr Ashvin Agarwal, Chief Clinical Officer and Senior Ophthalmologist at Dr Agarwals Eye Hospital, and Dr Daggula Devi Bharathi, Consultant Ophthalmologist at Dr Agarwals Eye Hospital Tirupati, highlight the importance of early eye examinations as the initiative aims to reach one million women across more than 280 centres in India during March
Preventive eye care for women is gaining renewed focus as healthcare providers encourage earlier screening and timely treatment to reduce avoidable vision loss. Dr Agarwals Eye Hospital has introduced a nationwide initiative aimed at improving access to eye examinations for women across India through its network of more than 280 eye hospitals and vision care centres.
The effort encourages individuals to nominate an important woman in their lives for a complimentary eye examination, with the hospital aiming to reach one million women through the initiative. The programme is being conducted during March in connection with International Women’s Day and is designed to address the tendency for many women to prioritise family responsibilities ahead of their own health needs.
Participants can register a nomination through a short online pledge form available on the hospital’s website or by contacting the dedicated campaign helpline. After a nomination is submitted, the hospital team reaches out directly to the nominated individual and schedules a priority consultation at the nearest Dr Agarwals Eye Hospital centre between March 8 and March 31, 2026.
Healthcare professionals say women often face greater barriers in accessing eye care services, which can increase the risk of preventable vision loss. Dr Ashvin Agarwal, Chief Clinical Officer and Senior Ophthalmologist at Dr Agarwals Eye Hospital, said disparities in access to treatment remain a concern.
“Studies show women have 35 percent higher odds of blindness and significantly lower access to cataract surgery, while a large population of women remain at risk of preventable vision loss each year due to caregiving responsibilities, cultural influences, and economic barriers often prevent them from seeking timely vision care.”
Regular eye examinations remain one of the most effective ways to detect vision problems early and prevent long term impairment. Dr Daggula Devi Bharathi, Consultant Ophthalmologist at Dr Agarwals Eye Hospital Tirupati, said timely screening and diagnosis are essential for maintaining eye health.
“Through this campaign, we are offering free comprehensive eye examinations and clinical consultations for women nationwide. Early and regular eye check ups play a crucial role in preventing avoidable vision impairment, enabling timely diagnosis and ensuring the right treatment at the right time.”
To support the initiative, the hospital has arranged dedicated consultation hours for women across both weekdays and weekends at its centres. During these hours, ophthalmologists will be available to provide focused consultations and guidance on eye health. Nominated participants will also have access to priority check ins and private consultation spaces on Sundays.
Through coordinated implementation across its national network, the initiative aims to increase awareness about preventive eye care while making it easier for women to access professional consultations and maintain long term vision health.
