World Elephant Day Session by Brightsun Travel Links Elephant Survival With Forests, Water and Responsible Tourism

Dr. G. Areendran of WWF-India highlighted habitat loss, fragmented corridors, climate change and human-elephant conflict, while Sandeep Arora of Brightsun Travel India urged travellers to make more responsible choices.

Brightsun Travel India marked World Elephant Day with a conservation awareness session examining how elephant survival is connected with forests, water systems, smaller species and the choices people make while travelling.
The session, titled The Little Things That Run the World, was led by Dr. G. Areendran, Director, Tech for Conservation at WWF-India and Coordinator, WWF EIACP PC-RP.
The discussion focused on the endangered Asian elephant and its ecological role in maintaining forest ecosystems.

Elephants were described as ecosystem engineers because of the way they create forest clearings, influence vegetation and disperse seeds, helping maintain habitats used by other plant and animal species.
The session also looked beyond elephants to smaller species such as birds, butterflies, fireflies and dragonflies, highlighting their wider role in maintaining healthy ecosystems.
Dr. Areendran discussed threats affecting elephant conservation, including habitat loss, fragmented wildlife corridors, infrastructure development, climate change, poaching and human-elephant conflict.

“Lasting solutions require protection and restoration of wildlife corridors, community-supported early-warning systems and timely assistance for families affected by human-elephant conflict,” he said.
The session encouraged participants to consider practical actions that can support biodiversity in everyday life.
These included growing native plants, reducing unnecessary outdoor lighting, avoiding harmful pesticides, limiting single-use plastic and supporting local conservation initiatives.
Responsible tourism formed another part of the discussion.
Travellers were encouraged to avoid wildlife products, choose ethical and low-impact nature experiences, respect animal habitats and support conservation organisations and communities living close to wildlife landscapes.

Sandeep Arora, Director, Brightsun Travel India, said travel provides people with an opportunity to experience nature more closely, but that engagement also creates a responsibility towards the places and species they encounter.
“Protecting elephants is closely linked to protecting forests, water systems, smaller species and the communities that share these landscapes,” Arora said.
He added that the company hopes the session encourages people to make more conscious choices both while travelling and in everyday life.
The initiative forms part of Brightsun Travel India’s effort to bring conservation and responsible travel into wider consumer conversations.

The World Elephant Day session also highlighted how conservation is not limited to protecting one species in isolation, but depends on maintaining the ecosystems and communities connected to it.
