Indian Single Malt Whisky Gets an Authenticity Mark as IMWA Introduces Industry Certification

Maj Gen (Dr) Rajesh Chopra, AVSM (Retd), Director General of the Indian Malt Whisky Association, said the certification trademark will help establish consistent production standards and improve consumer confidence in Indian single malt whisky.

India’s single malt whisky category is set to adopt a common standard for authenticity with the Indian Malt Whisky Association (IMWA) introducing a Certification Trademark for qualifying products.
The certification will appear as a secure hologram on Indian single malt whisky bottles that meet the association’s production standards. The initiative is intended to provide consumers with a clear identifier of products manufactured according to defined industry requirements while supporting quality standards across the category.

To qualify for certification, manufacturers must produce whisky using 100 percent malted barley without molasses or neutral spirits. Production must take place at a single distillery in India using copper pot stills, with the spirit matured for at least three years in oak casks of no more than 700 litres. Every stage of production, including mashing, distillation, maturation and bottling, must be completed within India, and external flavouring agents are not permitted.
Maj Gen (Dr) Rajesh Chopra, AVSM (Retd), Director General, Indian Malt Whisky Association, said, “As the Indian single malt category scales both domestically and globally, the need for a credible, industry owned validation mechanism becomes critical. The certification mark is not just about compliance but about establishing a shared baseline of authenticity and process integrity. It aims to bring clarity in a fragmented market, reinforce consumer trust, and ensure that the category’s growth is built on verifiable standards rather than perception alone.”

According to IMWA, the certification is expected to provide consumers with greater clarity in a category where production definitions have often differed across brands. The framework is also intended to support manufacturers by promoting consistent production practices and recognised quality benchmarks.
The association believes the initiative will contribute to the international positioning of Indian single malt whisky by aligning production standards with recognised global practices while reflecting India’s own distillation methods and climatic conditions.
Established in July 2024, the Indian Malt Whisky Association represents Indian malt whisky producers and works on industry standards, authenticity, quality and category development.
