Kanwarpriya Khanna, People Leader of India for Aon, said the Eco Wheels initiative helps women move toward self employment, financial independence and a greener Bengaluru.
Women from vulnerable communities in Bengaluru received 12 electric autorickshaws through Shishu Mandir’s Eco Wheels initiative, supported by Aon.
The vehicles were donated at the Shishu Nagar campus in Hella Nagar on June 23, 2026. With this addition, the Aon sponsored Eco Wheels fleet now includes 254 vehicles.
The 12 beneficiaries are mostly single mothers and widows from KR Puram and East Bengaluru. They have completed driving and safety training and will use the vehicles to begin earning through women run transport services.
The initiative is focused on two goals: creating livelihood opportunities for women from vulnerable communities and supporting green mobility. By helping women become micro entrepreneurs, Eco Wheels aims to improve financial security while encouraging cleaner and quieter transport in local communities.
The programme also includes financial education and savings support. Shishu Mandir helps each participant open a bank account and encourages regular savings through formal financial systems. Each driver contributes Rs. 3,000 per month towards personal savings for family security.
Kanwarpriya Khanna, People Leader of India for Aon, said, “At Aon, we believe that true empowerment begins when individuals have access to the right support and resources to build a more secure and independent future. Through the Eco-Wheels initiative, we are helping women with self-employment and financial independence. It is inspiring to witness these women shift from the unorganized sector and become empowered entrepreneurs contributing to their families and a greener Bengaluru.”
Wing Commander Retd. D. P. Sabharwal, Vice President of Shishu Mandir, said, “We at Shishu Mandir have always believed that empowerment means nothing less than providing the opportunity for financial security and hence peace of mind for the families we support. It is a moment of immense pride to reach the milestone of 254 autos today with the support of Aon. These women are now ‘Climate Champions’, showing us that sustainable and social change go hand in hand.”
Aon leaders, including Kanwarpriya Khanna and Symon Francis, joined Shishu Mandir’s management at the event.
Shishu Mandir was founded by Dr. Hella Mundhra in the early 1970s and began as a shelter for children with long standing illnesses whose families could not afford medical care. The organisation later expanded its work to education and broader social support for families and communities.
Aon is a global professional services firm working across risk, people and business decision making, with clients in more than 120 countries.
