Priya Agarwal Hebbar, Non Executive Director, Vedanta Limited, highlighted higher renewable energy use, expanded biomass adoption, nearly 40 lakh trees planted since FY21 and continued net water positive operations across three businesses in FY26.

New Delhi, June 5, 2026: On World Environment Day, Vedanta Group reported a 15% reduction in metals emissions intensity since FY21, reflecting progress across renewable energy adoption, biomass utilisation, afforestation and water stewardship initiatives.
The company reduced metals emissions intensity from 6.45 tCO₂e per tonne of metal in FY21 to 5.44 tCO₂e per tonne in FY26.
Vedanta said renewable energy consumption increased by more than 50 percent year on year to nearly 400 crore units in FY26. The increase helped avoid approximately 30 lakh tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions during the year.

The company also deployed 365 kilotonnes of biomass as an alternative fuel across operations, helping reduce carbon emissions by an estimated 5 lakh to 6 lakh tonnes. Around 360 kilotonnes of the biomass used came from Talwandi Sabo Power Limited, where biomass now contributes more than 5 percent of the fuel mix.
Alongside emissions reduction efforts, Vedanta continued its afforestation programme. Since FY21, the company has planted nearly 40 lakh trees across its operational regions and remains on track towards its target of 70 lakh trees by 2030 under the World Economic Forum’s 1 Trillion Trees initiative. Close to 10 lakh trees were planted during FY26 alone.

The group also continued water stewardship efforts. During FY26, Hindustan Zinc Limited, Vedanta Oil and Gas, and Vedanta Iron and Steel’s iron ore business maintained net water positive status by replenishing more water than they consumed.
Vedanta, which produces aluminium, zinc, silver, copper, iron ore and steel, said these efforts support both industrial growth and resource management goals.
Among its FY26 milestones, Hindustan Zinc became the first Indian mining company to join the International Council on Mining and Metals and secured the number one global ranking in the S&P Global Sustainability Yearbook 2026.
Hindustan Zinc’s Rampura Agucha operation became India’s first Zinc Mark certified mine, while Vedanta Aluminium was included in the S&P Global Sustainability Yearbook 2026 for the third consecutive year.

Vedanta Aluminium also introduced its low carbon aluminium product Restora at BALCO, while Vedanta Iron and Steel inaugurated the Maem Bandhara Watershed Management Project in Goa to support local farming communities and water access.
Vedanta Oil and Gas achieved the Gold Standard Pathway under the Oil and Gas Methane Partnership 2.0 programme.
Priya Agarwal Hebbar, Non Executive Director, Vedanta Limited, said the company continues to focus on resource efficiency, cleaner energy adoption and environmental stewardship across its businesses.
