India’s AI Talent Shortfall Frames Google’s New Professional Certificate on Coursera

Lisa Gevelber, Founder of Grow with Google, and Greg Hart, Chief Executive Officer of Coursera, position the 10 hour certificate with three months of complimentary Google AI Pro access as India faces a projected gap of over one million AI professionals by 2027

New Delhi, February 24, 2026: Google has introduced an AI Professional Certificate on Coursera as India prepares for a projected shortfall of more than one million skilled AI professionals by 2027.
According to Bain and Company, India could see 2.3 million AI related jobs by 2027, with an estimated 1.2 million qualified professionals available. The anticipated gap underscores growing demand for practical, job ready AI capabilities across industries.

The new certificate is designed to help professionals move beyond foundational knowledge and apply AI tools confidently and responsibly in everyday work. Google analysed hundreds of job descriptions and collaborated with employers to shape a curriculum focused on transferable skills across research, planning, communication, content development, data analysis and workflow automation.
Every learner who enrols receives three months of complimentary access to Google AI Pro, enabling hands on experience with advanced AI models including Gemini, NotebookLM and AI Studio.

Lisa Gevelber, Founder of Grow with Google, said, “The Google AI Professional Certificate translates the power of AI into tangible economic opportunity for every business and worker. Top employers and universities across the country will use this training to help their teams and students succeed. With three month complimentary access to Google AI Pro, learners can apply their new skills using Google’s most advanced AI models to build real world experience and prepare for an AI driven economy.”
Greg Hart, Chief Executive Officer of Coursera, said, “Success in an AI driven economy depends on people having access to the right skills needed to advance their careers and stay competitive in a rapidly changing job market. Google’s new certificate equips learners with the confidence to apply AI in their everyday work, and with access to Google AI Pro, learners can build practical experience while developing skills they can use immediately on the job.”

The program can be completed in approximately ten hours and includes seven short courses and a hands on capstone project. Upon completion, learners develop a portfolio demonstrating their ability to apply AI tools effectively and responsibly.
Coursera, launched in 2012 by Andrew Ng and Daphne Koller, reports 197 million registered learners as of December 31, 2025, and partners with more than 375 university and industry institutions worldwide. Through Grow with Google, the company has trained more than 13 million Americans in digital skills since 2017.
