Co-Founder Raj reflects on 40-year journey as Café Lilliput continues shaping sunset culture and late-night programming on Anjuna Beach, Goa
Anjuna, Goa | 2026: Café Lilliput has completed 40 years of continuous operations on the shores of Anjuna Beach, marking a milestone in Goa’s evolving nightlife and sundowner landscape.
Established in the mid-1980s, long before Goa entered mainstream global tourism circuits, the venue began as a modest beachside eatery serving travellers drawn to Anjuna’s free-spirited gatherings and organic music sessions. Over four decades, it has evolved into a recognised cultural anchor that mirrors the transformation of Goa’s coastal nightlife.
Operating daily from 8 AM until 6 AM, Café Lilliput remains one of the few beachfront venues that spans the entire coastal rhythm — from early morning breakfasts overlooking the Arabian Sea, to sunset sessions, to high-energy nights that stretch into sunrise.
A Constant Through Goa’s Nightlife Transitions
The late 1980s and 1990s saw Anjuna emerge as a global reference point for electronic and trance movements. As the 2000s ushered in larger venues, ticketed events and commercial nightlife formats, several early beach spaces disappeared or transformed.
Through the 2010s and into 2026, Goa’s nightlife has matured into a hybrid ecosystem — balancing heritage venues, curated underground programming, experiential sundowners and destination hospitality formats.
Across these shifts, Café Lilliput has retained its open-air beachfront character while scaling its programming to include techno nights, DJ takeovers, live sessions and seasonal celebrations.
Forty Years of Sunset Culture
The venue has become synonymous with Anjuna’s golden hour ritual. Evenings see travellers and locals gather along the beachfront as the sky transitions from blue to amber to deep pink, with music gradually building as day turns into night.
What began as an informal gathering space has evolved into one of Anjuna’s most recognisable sunset vantage points, blending relaxed seating, sea views and curated soundscapes.
Food, Familiarity and Community
Alongside its music programming, Café Lilliput’s multi-cuisine offering continues to draw repeat visitors. From beer batter prawns, seafood platters and Goan curries to wood-fired pizzas, pastas, grills and tropical beverages, the menu reflects its inclusive, all-day identity.
Generations of travellers have returned not only for the nightlife, but for continuity and familiarity by the sea.
A Founder’s Reflection
Reflecting on the milestone, Co-Founder Raj said:
“When we started, Anjuna was about people meeting on the beach with no agenda except music, conversation and freedom. We never planned to build a landmark. We just wanted to create a space where everyone felt welcome.
Over the years, Goa changed, tourism changed, music evolved. But what has stayed the same is the feeling you get when the sun sets here and the first beat drops at night. Completing forty years is not just about longevity. It is about staying true to the spirit of this place while growing with the times.”
Raj remains actively involved in operations and programming, maintaining the café’s founding ethos while adapting to contemporary formats.
As Goa balances heritage and innovation in 2026, Café Lilliput enters its fifth decade positioned not as a trend-driven venue, but as a living archive of Anjuna’s coastal culture.
