Mahindra Racing claims Tokyo E Prix victory as Nyck de Vries secures second win of the season

Nyck de Vries delivered Mahindra Racing’s second Formula E victory of the campaign, while Edoardo Mortara claimed his fourth pole position of the season before retiring from the second race.

Mahindra Racing concluded the Tokyo E Prix weekend with 38 points after Nyck de Vries claimed victory in the second race of the double header, while team mate Edoardo Mortara secured pole position before retiring following a late race incident.
The result marked de Vries’ second win of the 2025 and 2026 FIA Formula E World Championship season and the sixth Formula E victory of his career. It also gave Mahindra Racing multiple race wins in a single season for the first time since the 2017 and 2018 campaign.

The Tokyo weekend featured changing weather conditions that influenced strategy throughout both races. On Saturday, Mortara finished fifth after qualifying second and spending much of the race in podium contention. De Vries, however, finished 17th after suffering a puncture on the opening lap.
Mortara continued his strong qualifying form on Sunday by taking pole position after defeating António Félix da Costa in the final qualifying duel. The achievement was his fourth pole position of the season, equalling the Formula E record for the most poles in a single campaign. De Vries qualified fifth.

The race began behind the Safety Car because of wet conditions. Mortara initially held the lead before strategic Attack Mode deployments and changing track conditions altered the order. De Vries, who had dropped down the field during the early stages, steadily recovered as the circuit dried.
A decisive Attack Mode activation later in the race enabled de Vries to overtake the front runners and move into the lead. Mortara, meanwhile, was involved in a multi car incident in the closing laps that forced his retirement and brought out a red flag.

Following the restart, de Vries successfully defended his lead over Nick Cassidy and Jake Dennis during a one lap sprint to the finish to secure victory.
The result moved de Vries to ninth in the Drivers’ Championship standings, while Mortara remains fifth. Mahindra Racing leaves Tokyo with 210 points in the Teams’ Championship, one point behind third placed Andretti with two races remaining this season.
Speaking after the race, Nyck de Vries said, “We were a little bit lucky today. We opted for a drying track and in hindsight that worked out in our favour. We got a poor start, but I think it was very important to save energy at the beginning of the race because once the track dried, you needed it.

“We had some more luck at the end with the red flag because Jake Dennis was coming on strong in Attack Mode. I’m very happy and proud of the team who executed a great race to get our second win of the season.”
Edoardo Mortara said, “It’s a disappointing result on a day when we showed quite a lot of performance. When you start from pole and everything is fully wet, there’s very little to gamble.
“I started with the wet set up, and this wasn’t the right call. But fortunately, we split the strategy and it worked out very well for Nyck, so I’m very happy for the team.”

Team Principal and Chief Executive Officer Frederic Bertrand said, “First of all, it was a strong result for the team in what was a challenging weekend. Amazing pace from our two drivers over one lap, and in particular Edoardo securing P2 yesterday and pole position today, as well as Nyck getting P5 on the grid today. It shows we are the most competitive right now when it comes to Qualifying.
“This weekend was challenging from a strategic and energy management perspective. Edoardo did an excellent job yesterday to secure fifth position after a tough race with Sebastien Buemi. Today was a bit more of a gamble with the set up, but Nyck managed an impressive drive to take his second win of the season, which has really had a big impact for us in the Teams’ Championship.”
Rounds 16 and 17 of the FIA Formula E World Championship will take place in London on 15 and 16 August.
