Spine and joint diagnostics gain new capability in Hyderabad with AI enabled weight bearing MRI at Mallika Hospitals

The system introduced at Mallika Hospitals in KPHB Hyderabad enables spine and joint imaging under natural body load, with spine surgeon Dr. J. Naresh Babu highlighting its role in improving evaluation of complex musculoskeletal conditions.

Hyderabad has added a new dimension to musculoskeletal imaging with the installation of an AI enabled G Scan Open Weight Bearing MRI system at Mallika Hospitals in KPHB. The technology, introduced for the first time in Telangana, allows doctors to examine how the spine and joints behave under natural body weight conditions.
Conventional MRI scans are typically conducted while a patient is lying down. While effective for many diagnostic purposes, the supine position may not always reveal abnormalities that occur when the body is under normal physiological load. The G Scan Open MRI system addresses this limitation by enabling imaging while the patient is positioned in ways that simulate everyday movement and weight distribution.

The technology allows clinicians to assess spinal and joint behaviour in standing, sitting and bending positions. This capability helps doctors identify structural changes and functional problems that may not appear during traditional imaging.
The system is particularly useful for evaluating chronic back and neck pain, disc herniations, spinal stenosis and spinal instability. It can also assist in diagnosing knee disorders, ligament injuries and sports related joint problems. By capturing how the body responds to natural weight bearing, clinicians are able to gain a more comprehensive view of musculoskeletal conditions.

The installation of the system marks an important development for Mallika Hospitals and Spine Centre in Hyderabad. The facility continues to expand its diagnostic capabilities with advanced imaging technologies aimed at improving clinical decision making.
The Spine Centre at the hospital is led by spine surgeon Dr. J. Naresh Babu and focuses on the management of complex spinal conditions. In addition to spine care, the hospital provides multidisciplinary medical services including nephrology under Dr. Ranganath and women’s health services led by Dr. Radhika.

With the introduction of the standing dynamic MRI system, Mallika Hospitals aims to make advanced diagnostic imaging more accessible for patients in Hyderabad and surrounding regions. The technology is expected to support earlier and more accurate detection of spine and joint disorders while improving treatment planning for patients with musculoskeletal conditions.
