Sacred travel writing draws attention as Lokesh Ohri presents Ambles Across Godland

Lokesh Ohri said the book follows journeys across Uttarakhand’s temples, rivers and villages, with the launch held at Humayun’s Tomb in New Delhi

Interest in travel writing based on culture and lived experience is increasing, with Lokesh Ohri presenting a new book centred on Uttarakhand.
Ambles Across Godland was launched at the museum at Humayun’s Tomb World Heritage Site in New Delhi. The book looks at Uttarakhand, long known as Devbhoomi, through its places of worship, local traditions and everyday life.

It follows journeys across mountains, rivers, villages and temples, bringing together accounts of pilgrimage, local stories and the relationship between people and their surroundings.
The book combines travel writing with references to history and belief systems, while examining what gives certain places spiritual importance.

The launch event included a discussion with the author, followed by a panel on heritage through slow travel featuring Aman Nath, Sohail Hashmi and Sejal Worah, moderated by Soity Banerjee. The programme concluded with a musical performance by Chandrabadni Himalayii Naad.
Lokesh Ohri said, “Aimed particularly at travellers to Uttarakhand, the book encourages readers to go beyond tourism. In its pages, a tourist gradually becomes a traveller and the traveller, in turn, becomes a seeker, engaging more thoughtfully with the land, its people, and its cultural memory.”

Randhir Kumar Arora, Partner at Book World Dehradun, said, “Ambles Across Godland is a thoughtful exploration of the sacred geography of the Himalaya. Through Lokesh Ohri’s journeys and reflections, the book encourages readers to look beyond tourism and experience the deeper cultural and spiritual connections that define the mountains.”
The book is published by Book World and supported by the Uttarakhand Tourism Development Board. It is available at leading bookstores and online platforms.
