IIHMR University Renames Its School of Development Studies in Honour of M. L. Mehta

The decision acknowledges Shri M. L. Mehta’s long-standing contribution to public administration and his formative guidance in shaping IIHMR’s academic direction and mission.

IIHMR University has formally renamed its School of Development Studies as the M. L. Mehta School of Development Studies following approval by the Board of Management in its 33rd meeting. The decision reflects the University’s recognition of Shri M. L. Mehta’s long-standing contributions to public administration and his formative guidance in shaping IIHMR’s academic direction and mission.

Shri M. L. Mehta, an eminent IAS officer who served as Chief Secretary to the Government of Rajasthan, played a key advisory role during the establishment and early growth of the Institute of Health Management Research, which later evolved into IIHMR University. His counsel supported the institution’s efforts to strengthen research-led development practices, promote evidence-based decision-making, and build academic programmes grounded in public service values.

Dr P. R. Sodani, President of IIHMR University, noted that the renaming reflects the University’s respect for Shri Mehta’s contributions and the influence of his approach to governance, institutional development, and social equity. He added that the school will continue to advance these principles through its teaching, research, and collaborations across the development sector.

Shri M. L. Mehta’s work in administration included initiatives focused on strengthening public institutions, improving livelihood opportunities, and expanding community-centred development models in Rajasthan. His involvement in several state initiatives contributed to improvements in rural development systems and placed emphasis on inclusive growth. His association with IIHMR helped shape its early frameworks for research, health systems strengthening, and development management.

With the renaming of the school, IIHMR University aims to reinforce its commitment to development studies as a multidisciplinary field that connects public policy, social systems, and institutional practice. The University stated that the M. L. Mehta School of Development Studies will continue to build programmes that reflect India’s development priorities and prepare professionals equipped to contribute to governance and social development in diverse contexts.
