From Indian Shores to Sri Lankan Sands: The Island Nation Pitches Itself as the Next Big Wedding Destination

Ahead of the coming wedding season, Sri Lanka Tourism is reaching Indian couples with curated showcases in Mumbai, Ahmedabad, and New Delhi to present its coastal resorts, heritage backdrops, and bespoke luxury packages

India’s wedding industry has long looked inward – from palaces in Rajasthan to beaches in Goa. But in recent years, young couples are looking just across the Palk Strait for something fresh yet familiar. Sri Lanka, with its mix of heritage temples, colonial mansions, and sun-soaked beaches, is quietly emerging as a neighbourhood rival to traditional Indian wedding destinations.
Recognising the pull of India’s luxury wedding market, Sri Lanka Tourism is preparing a multi-city showcase this September, beginning in Mumbai before travelling to Ahmedabad and New Delhi. The events are designed to put Indian wedding planners, travel agents, and families face-to-face with the island’s leading resorts, boutique properties, and curated wedding specialists.

From beachfront ceremonies in Bentota to heritage settings in Kandy and exclusive luxury retreats near Galle, the country is promoting itself as a place where proximity meets extravagance. The focus is on bespoke experiences that carry the grandeur of Indian weddings while offering the intimacy of an island escape.

For Sri Lanka’s hospitality sector, this is more than a tourism push. It is about aligning with a cultural moment in India, where weddings are no longer just family functions but global events, blending tradition with curated luxury. By bringing its properties and packages directly to Indian buyers, Sri Lanka is making a statement: the island is not an alternative but a natural extension of India’s wedding imagination.

With direct flights from most metros and cultural familiarity from cuisine to rituals – Sri Lanka offers what planners call a “home abroad.” And as Indian weddings continue to expand in scale, it may well be the next neighbour to claim a slice of the billion-dollar market.
