Harkaran Singh Grewal, Co Founder and Director, EuMo, says the FHR Wilderness Lodge uses restrained architecture, natural materials and site responsive planning to connect its cottages, golf greens and shared spaces with the surrounding environment.
EuMo Spatial has announced its design for the FHR Wilderness Lodge Chandigarh, a hospitality retreat situated on the edge of the Sukhna Wildlife Sanctuary.
The Mumbai based firm led the masterplanning, architecture, landscape integration, interiors and furniture design for the property, with the site and surrounding environment guiding the planning approach.
The development comprises eight cottages. Six standalone cottages contain two guest rooms each, while the property also includes a Presidential Cottage and a separate two bedroom cottage with its own kitchen, gazebo and private swimming pool.
Shared facilities include lounge, dining, pantry and bar spaces. An infinity pool overlooks a water stream and the golf course.
Each cottage is approached through a semi open entrance porch, creating a gradual transition between the landscape and interior spaces while extending part of the living experience outdoors.
The masterplan positions the accommodation and common areas around a central social space while maintaining views across the property. Service functions have been placed beneath the dining pavilion to keep operational infrastructure discreet.
The architectural approach draws on colonial era proportions interpreted through a contemporary design language. Natural materials, muted colours and custom furniture are used across the interiors, while artwork and material references draw from the ecology of the surrounding area.
Lighting, movement through the property and outdoor amenities have also been planned around interaction with the landscape, including changing natural light, views and the surrounding greens.
Harkaran Singh Grewal (Gary), Co-Founder & Director, EuMo, said, “Design in physical environments is often as much about what we choose to leave untouched as what we introduce. At FHR Wilderness Lodge, the design approach was rooted in allowing the landscape to remain the dominant experience. The architecture is deliberately restrained, framing views, drawing natural light deep into the spaces and creating a continuous dialogue between the built environment and its natural setting.
Luxury finds its most enduring expression through proportion, materiality, light and a sense of quietness. The intention was to create architecture that feels firmly rooted in its setting and becomes more meaningful with time.”
Grewal also said, “Every site has an inherent character, and good design begins by understanding and responding to it rather than imposing a predetermined architectural language. At FHR Wilderness Lodge, the natural contours of the terrain, the existing golf landscape and the ecological character of the site became fundamental to the planning strategy.
These considerations informed the way we positioned the buildings, shaped the movement through the property and established relationships between interior and exterior spaces. The result is an architecture that is understated yet distinctive where landscape, built form and the experience of moving through the spaces are conceived as one continuous design.”
EuMo Spatial is part of EuMo, a Mumbai based design firm founded in 2005 by Shanoo Bhatia and Harkaran Singh Grewal. Its hospitality work includes Sawai Shivir Ranthambore, Jaagir Lodge Dudhwa, Kohima Camp by The Ultimate Travelling Camp and projects for Forest Hill Resort.
