Community and Hospitality Lessons Emerge From Mokai Café Experience in Bandra

Kareena Bulchandani, Founder of Mokai Café in Mumbai, reflects on building a presence driven café space inspired by Japanese and Southeast Asian café culture.

Mumbai, March 6, 2026: Mokai Café, located on Chapel Road in Bandra, has developed into a distinctive presence within one of Mumbai’s most active café neighbourhoods since opening in 2024. Founded by Kareena Bulchandani, the café was designed to prioritise human connection, calm environments and community centred hospitality.
Drawing inspiration from Japanese and Southeast Asian café culture, Mokai was envisioned as a space where guests could slow down in contrast to Mumbai’s fast paced urban rhythm. The concept focuses on creating an environment that encourages presence and comfort rather than quick turnover.

Reflecting on the process of building the café, Kareena Bulchandani said the journey offered insights that extend beyond hospitality operations.
“A café is ultimately about people, not plates,” she said, noting that while interiors and menus attract initial attention, it is familiarity and warmth that encourage guests to return. Over time, Mokai has become a place for conversations, solo afternoons, creative work sessions and quiet moments.

The space was intentionally designed to encourage guests to spend more time rather than feel rushed. Inspired by cafés across China, Singapore and Southeast Asia, the layout, seating and lighting create a setting where visitors feel comfortable staying longer.
Food and coffee at Mokai are positioned as comforting and approachable. The menu combines Asian café style comfort food with Japanese inspired design elements while maintaining a relaxed approach to specialty coffee.

Bulchandani said community building depends on consistency rather than novelty. Reliable service, familiar experiences and a welcoming atmosphere gradually helped Mokai develop into a third place environment between home and work.
The name Mokai reflects the philosophy behind the café. The word combines moka, referring to the coffee pot, and ai, which means love in Japanese. The concept reflects a hospitality approach centred on warmth and intention.
According to Bulchandani, purpose remains an important anchor for hospitality businesses operating in competitive markets. Aligning daily operations with a clear vision helps maintain focus on creating meaningful guest experiences.
As Mokai continues to evolve as an experiential café brand, the emphasis remains on building welcoming environments where guests can slow down, connect and feel at ease.
