AR Rahman, a world-renowned music composer, is known for preferring to communicate in Tamil over any other language. In fact, after winning two Oscars for Slumdog Millionaire, he ended his acceptance speech with the words “Ellapughazum Iraivanukue” [All praise to God].

AR Rahman shared a picture of ‘Thamizhanangu’ on the same day that Home Minister Amit Shah said people from different states should speak Hindi rather than English (Tamil Angel). It showed a woman dressed in white with her hair open, dancing while wielding a spear.
Thamizhanangu, or “Goddess Tamil,” is a word from the Tamil national anthem, Tamil Thai Vazhthu. Manonmaniam Sundaram Pillai wrote it, and MS Viswanathan composed it.
AR Rahman captioned the photo with a line from poet Paavendhar Bharathisan’s poem ‘Thamizhukkum Amudhendru Per’ [Tamil is also known as Elixir], which translates to “Our beloved Tamil is the root that holds our existence together.”
