Feminism Is Critical For A Country Like India For 7 Reasons

It’s not uncommon to hear the word “feminist” spoken over the dinner table or in newspaper disputes. This is one of the most misinterpreted and misunderstood terms in English. What does it mean to be a feminist? Is this a conflict between men? Is it possible to put women ahead of men?

Feminism believes that all persons, regardless of gender, are equal. Feminism is a movement that promotes women’s empowerment so that men and women are treated equally. It isn’t about putting guys down or declaring them to be inferior. It is not established on the assumption that women should have power over males; instead, it is based on the idea that women should have control over themselves.

Because it comes from the word “feminine,” feminism is frequently misunderstood as a “women’s movement.” However, we must recognize that feminism is more than a women’s movement; it is a “movement for all people” concerned with the freedom of both men and women. However, we must acknowledge that women have been the primary victims of patriarchy and toxic masculinity for many years. Feminism is an endeavor to eliminate the concepts of dominance and subordination, bringing both genders to an equal footing.

We had some excellent feminist symbols in our culture and history even before the term feminism was coined. Draupadi, a woman, born from the fire, sought retribution for the humiliation she suffered in the Mahabharata. Durga Maa was created as an amalgamation of all the Gods to eliminate evil. She is an incarnation of goddess Parvati. Sita battled for her autonomy and raised her two sons in the Ramayana. Rani Lakshmi Bai and Chand Bibi live other tremendous courage and power examples.

Why Is Feminism So Essential For An Indian Country?

  1. To End Male Dominance Over Women
Feminism is needed in India because a woman should never be regarded as a male’s burden throughout her life, whether her father, brother, spouse or son. The level of male dominance is highlighted by practices such as ‘kanyadaan,’ ‘Raksha Bandhan,’ and the ‘purdah system,’ in which a woman is shrouded beneath a ghoonghat. These practices emphasize the need for strong, capable men to protect weak, vulnerable women and that woman aren’t created to defend but instead protected.
  2. To Encourage Gender Equality
Because a woman is not responsible and marriage should not be the sole reason for her existence, India requires feminism. Every year, over 2 lakh girls are killed before they are born, and thousands of mothers are killed due to dowry harassment.
  3. Ensure that women are treated with respect regardless of their career choices
Feminism is needed in India because women are treated with contempt whether or not they are employed. A segment of our society believes it is unethical for a woman to be well-educated and support herself or her family financially. Another hysterical part of our population believes that becoming a housewife will negatively impact women’s liberation.
Women who prefer to stay at home and raise their children full-time are chastised. But it’s critical to understand that just because a woman isn’t making money doesn’t mean her work isn’t valuable. According to some studies, being a stay-at-home mom equals working 2.5 jobs. As a result, a profession’s importance should be determined not by the amount of money it pays but by the quantity of value it provides.
It’s past time for us to acknowledge that feminism isn’t just about making women strong. Women are already powerful beings. It’s all about influencing how the rest of the world sees this power. Nobody should be embarrassed to be called a feminist since it liberates men and women from gender norms. Because my seeking my rights will not rob you of yours, feminism should not be interpreted as hatred toward men!
