The Modi administration intends to provide CoWin — the technological backbone of India’s immunization program
The Modi administration intends to provide CoWin — the technological backbone of India’s immunization program — as a “licensed by the central government” product that would be available to all “interested countries for free, in perpetuity.”
According to Dr. R.S. Sharma, head of the Empowered Committee for the Administration of the Covid-19 Vaccine, the sole restriction is that the software not be utilized as a platform for commercial usage or repackaged and marketed.
So far, 76 nations have expressed interest in the Centre, he said. He went on to say that the government plans to convene a virtual global conference for health and technology professionals from across the world on July 5 to exhibit the software’s potential.
According to Sharma, “196 foreign authorities and 116 private persons from 41 nations have registered for participation in the Global Conclave on Cowin.” “In due course, we will also have information on the nations that formally demonstrate their interest in using the platform for immunization in their particular countries,” he says.
He went on to say that the government of India intends to offer the platform as a licensed product but that it would be made accessible for free to interested governments.
The essential thing to remember here is that Cowin is a public digital good in India, and it will be shared with other nations in the same way,” Sharma added. “It will not be permitted to be utilized as a commercial platform or for repackaging only to resell to someone else.” Cowin is the world’s fastest-growing technology platform.
According to him, Cowin had 20 crore registrations in the first four months following its start on January 16. As of July 1, 35.4 crore individuals have registered on the site, he noted. The government is now aiming to update the Cowin program by making modifications such as connecting passport numbers to vaccination certificates. Other improvements will include adding a tab for updating personal information, allowing for revisions to vaccination certificates.
In many situations, the government has discovered that people provide inaccurate personal information while registering, such as their name, birth time, or gender. Sharma stated.
“We will now allow people to update these data to make changes to their immunization certificates.” The updated application would enable the collection of two first dosage certificates for the same person.
