Adamant Bihar groom’s dowry demand video goes viral

In the video, the man claims that dowry is a common practice and that people were aware of his situation only because he did not receive it, and there was a stir.

While it is illegal to solicit for or give dowry, a video of a man in Bihar defending his demands on camera has gone viral. The video shows the groom refused to marry after stating that the bride’s family failed to meet his expectations, which drew criticism online. The incident, however, is not true, according to the fact-checking website AltNews, and was created by a content developer using actors.

In the video, the groom, a teacher’s son, and a government employee are heard declaring that he will not marry the woman if his expectations are not met. The video takes place in a Bihar village.

“Abhi humko cash nahi mila hai.” Samaan sab gachha huya tha nahi mila hai. Ek chain gachha huya tha woh bhi nahi mila hai (I have not yet gotten the cash. I have not received everything that was promised to me. “Even the chain hasn’t arrived yet”),” the groom says.

“To kis Aadhaar par hum shaadi kare?” (So, on what basis do I get married?)” he adds, threatening to return his wedding party if he does not marry the woman. When the guy filming the situation argues it’s wrong to ask for dowry, the groom responds, “Kaun kehta hai ki dahej nahi chalta hai (Who says dowry isn’t practiced)?”
The man of Bihar goes on to say that dowry is a common practise and that people were aware of his case since he did not receive it and there was a disturbance. As he continued to threaten, the bride was overheard indicating that most of his demands had been met and that only Rs 1 lakh in cash remained, which she said would be paid later. The groom, on the other hand, is heard saying that he needs everything “right now,” including the promised gold chain and ring.
The person behind the camera presses him once again and interrogates him about his activities. “Agar aisa hi baat tha, apni aukaat wale ke saath sochte,” the man responds. What is the saath of a sarkari naukri? (If this was about to happen, they should have found someone of their social standing.) Why target those who work for the government)?”
According to AltNews, the video was first shared on Divya Vikram’s Facebook page in February. The video was developed for Vikram Mishra’s channel Jai Mithila. Mishra told the reporters that it was not a real wedding but a scenario performed out by two actors named Amit and Rani.
“Both Amit and Rani are husband and wife who work together,” the source continued, adding that the duo had previously appeared in multiple such videos for the channel.
The video may have been manufactured, but it sparked an online debate.
