Azelaic Acid: The Underrated Ingredient in Skincare

An Authored Article by Dr. Vibhuti Dhaundiyal, MBBS, PGDCC, DAM & MD-RV Luxe Wellness Clinic

As an aesthetic physician, I have encountered many skincare products marketed as “miracle cures” for various skin concerns. However, one ingredient that often gets overlooked and deserves more recognition is Azelaic Acid.

Azelaic Acid is a naturally occurring dicarboxylic acid used for decades to treat various skin conditions. Its anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties make it an effective treatment for acne, rosacea, and hyperpigmentation. Studies have shown Azelaic Acid can be just as effective as other popular skincare ingredients like benzoyl peroxide and tretinoin in treating acne. A study published in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology found that Azelaic Acid was more effective in reducing inflammatory lesions and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation than benzoyl peroxide.

Although Azelaic Acid is proven effective, it remains an underutilized skincare ingredient. Its benefits are not widely known, and it is frequently eclipsed by other popular skincare ingredients such as retinol and hyaluronic acid. The lack of marketing by skincare brands could be one explanation for this. Azelaic Acid is less prominent than other ingredients, so it may not be as noticeable as others to consumers.

On the other hand, the availability of Azelaic Acid is one hindrance, as it is a prescription-only ingredient in some countries, which limits its accessibility to the general public.

However, with the growing trend towards natural and organic skincare, Azelaic Acid is gaining more attention. It is a safe and effective alternative to harsher chemical treatments, making it a popular choice for sensitive skin users.

Moreover, Azelaic Acid is safe for use during pregnancy. According to a study published in the Journal of Cutaneous Medicine and Surgery, Azelaic Acid can be a safe and effective treatment for acne during pregnancy.
A recent study in the Journal of Drugs in Dermatology revealed that Azelaic Acid was well-tolerated by patients with sensitive skin and demonstrated notable enhancements in the appearance of melasma.
To sum up, Azelaic Acid is a valuable but often overlooked skincare ingredient that merits greater acknowledgment. As an aesthetic physician, I encourage integrating it into your skincare regimen, primarily if you experience acne, rosacea, or hyperpigmentation. It is a secure and efficient component that can assist you in attaining your healthiest skin.
