UN International Day of the Victims of Genocide. Let’s honor the victims. Victims of Genocide, Let’s honor the victims – It is a global event instituted by the United Nations Organization to address the victims of genocides and highlight humanity’s responsibility to prevent these in the future. The event is an opportunity to memorialize and honor victims of past genocides. 

What is genocide?

Genocide means eradication of the ethnic, racial, or religious group. According to the death toll, the Holocaust perpetrated by Nazi Germany during World War two was one of the worst genocides recorded in history. According to some estimates, up to 11 million people (Victims of Genocide) were systematically murdered between 1942 to 1945. The number of people killed in genocide has drastically decreased since the end of the last world war. Still, there are many genocide atrocities in the recent decade. 

Youth awareness 

On 9 th December 1948, the United Nations adopted the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide, the first document to impact combating and preventing genocide significantly. The purpose of the day is to address the victims of the crime, raise awareness, and avoid development that may lead to mass atrocities. This day marks global awareness among the youth to stop the genocide. Genocides do not happen overnight. They may usually precede a well recognizable pattern of deterioration of human rights and fundamental freedom, discrimination, and stigmatization of vulnerable groups. 

How a united nation works towards the prevention of genocide.

With its prevention toolbox, the united nation will elaborate on human rights can play a vital role in advancing the early morning signal against genocide and other atrocities. Acknowledging the past events and offering apologies to the survivors and victims is the main reason for the day. Genocide prevention embraces several essential elements. Today we will focus on the role of remembrance and education for the prevention of future atrocities. Memory and education is critical to the prevention framework as they entail the acknowledgment of the crime committed in the past as wells as a commitment to no occurrence in the future
