NASA: National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), an autonomous United States government organization founded in 1958 to conduct research and development of vehicles and activities to explore space within and beyond Earth’s atmosphere.
The organization is divided into four mission directorates: Aeronautics Research, which is responsible for the development of advanced aviation technologies; Science, which is responsible for programs aimed at explaining the foundation, construction, and development of the world, the stellar system, and Earth; Space Technology, which is responsible for the expansion of space astronomy and research technologies; and Human Exploration and Operations, which is effective for human exploration and services.
NASA was founded in response to the Soviet Union’s launch of its first satellite, Sputnik I, on October 4, 1957. In 98 minutes, the 183-pound, basketball-sized satellite orbited the Earth. The launch of Sputnik took Americans off guard and generated fears that the Soviets would also be capable of delivering nuclear-armed missiles from Europe to America.
The United States, which prided itself on doing at the cutting edge of technology, was embarrassed and immediately began designing a response, kicking off the U.S.-Soviet space race. Sputnik II, a dog named Laika, was launched by the Soviets on November 3, 1957. America attempted to launch its satellite, Vanguard, in December, but it burst shortly after takeoff.
Explorer I, the first U.S. satellite to successfully orbit the Earth, made things better on January 31, 1958. Since the first moonwalk, NASA has made significant achievements in space exploration, including playing a vital role in creating the International Space Station.
However, the agency has also faced devastating setbacks, like the catastrophes that killed the crews of the Challenger and Columbia space shuttles in 1986 and 2003, respectively.
