In a collaboration of its kind, one of India’s three national museums, The Salar Jung Museum plans on working together with India’s expert antique furniture restoration and design company – East Lifestyle, to bring life to forgotten antiques. The collaboration involves in-depth cataloguing and restoration of precious furniture items that are housed in the museum, collected by Salar Jung III, from across the world, over his lifetime!
The Director of the museum, Dr. Nagender Redyy comes with a progressive approach towards the up-keep of the museum. In the last decade the museum has seen major developments ranging from the architecture of the museum to how the artefacts are showcased to the visitors. This vision of improvement now continues with East Lifestyle taking up this prestigious project. East Lifestyle has been restoring antique furniture for private collectors, for over 25 years now and specializes in Period European Furniture.
During the first visit, Mr. Kabir Bhasin, CEO- East Lifestyle, and his team, discovered furniture items which are of significant value but are lost in lot due to scarcity of knowledge in India, in the field of Antique furniture.
One of the major discovery was the ‘Bureau de Roi’ – The King’s Desk – produced in 1889 by Alfred Emmanuel Beaurdley, most prestigious furniture maker on the 19th century. The Desk has multiple secret compartments, still unknown to the museum. A similar Desk was produced for the Tsar of Russia in the same period. Another known copy of this desk was auctioned at Chrsitie’s in 2018 for 900,500 USD.
In this upcoming collaboration, Salar Jung Museum and East Lifestyle, both aim to bring light to the marvelous pieces that are hidden in the collection of the museum. In further news, a renowned design school is also willing to be a part of this process and include ‘Restoration of antiques’ as part of their curricular.
