Record Prices for Iconic Indian Film Memorabilia at deRivaz & Ives Auction

11th April 2022, Mumbai & New Delhi: deRivaz & Ives Inaugural India’s Film Poster Heritage Online Auction was a spectacular success for achieving new records for many of the iconic images of Indian cinema, with many Lots passing 50 bids in the intense struggle to own a small part of India’s crumbling and fragile paper-based cinematic heritage.

Mother India, Mughal-e-Azam, Deewaar, Awara, Khel Khel Mein, Sholay & Junglee all cross 100,000 and break previous highs

Lot 70 Mother India (1957) | Winning Bid INR 425,600

There was intense competition for the iconic items but for many lesser known films and designs the interest was minimal. This is the same trait one recognized in the development of the art market when Husain, Raza, Souza, Sher Gil, Ravi Varma, Rabindranath Tagore all found intense bidding twenty years ago, while Pyne, Bhattacharjee, Gaitonde, Swaminathan, Sailoz, Mukherjee, Baij were still not privileged with the collectors.

The intense competition between a handful of film buffs – a few from the fraternity, some based out of India, some just respectful of the fragile poster heritage – lead to some unexpected tussles such as Khel Khel Mein (1973), Shatranj Ke Khilari (1978) and the four iconic photographic images of Amitabh Bachchan on the re-release lobby cards of Deewaar (1975).

Lot 58 Khel Khel Mein (1973) | Winning Bid INR 179,200

Lot 58 Mughal-E-Azam (1960) | Winning Bid INR 380,800

Relatively lesser known films of Dev Anand such as Aandhiyan (1952), House No.44 (1955) & Manzil (1960) all broke records as did other relatively lesser known film posters such as Tarana (1951), Khamoshi (1969), Aavishkar & Majboor (1974), Mili (1975) & Laila Majnu (1976).
Lot 35 Mughal-E-Azam (1960) | Winning Bid INR 291,200
“We are pleased with our Inaugural auction on India’s film poster heritage; it is always good to establish new world records even in a relatively nascent and small market. Naturally, the market is rapidly growing with interest from England, Singapore, Dubai, USA and naturally India. However the participation of the film fraternity will need to improve if the preservation efforts are to take a significant leap forward. I am sure our next auction will galvanise further interest” stated Ambassador (Retd.) Niranjan Desai, Chief Spokesperson of deRivaz & Ives.
Lot 9 Awara (1951) | Winning Bid INR 179,200
