Physiotherapy for Pcod or Pcos …???

In today’s era where women are no longer behind men in the financial world but also has a role to play in the household chores, there’s hardly any time left for her selves.

Today on the occasion of Women’s Day, Dr. Pranoti Kangutkar, a physiotherapist by profession, founder of Dr. Pranoti’s Physio Lounge, Mumbai and President of Women’s Wing, Maharashtra for Global Association for Physiotherapy, said, “Today 4 out of 10 women are silent sufferers of PCOD. In India, especially in the rural areas, where even talking about menstruation is a taboo, bringing up the topic PCOD or PCOS is far way long. In urban areas, females at least approach their doctors for the same.

But here the another problem is many if them are completely unaware of what exactly they are facing, is it PCOD or PCOS , where PCOD is a disease and PCOS is a syndrome, both causing the formation of follicle cysts in the ovaries, also leads to excess secretion of androgen, a male steroid hormone, which causes several unusual changes in the body.

Pcos is a syndrome where many cysts (sacs filed with liquids) starts growing on ovaries and are often made of immature eggs and other bodily secretions . While PCOD is a disease is a similar issue but minor in nature compared to polycystic ovary syndrome. They are smaller sacs which can go in few months after having a lifestyle change but can also reoccur.

In PCOD, normally periods are delayed. Symptoms of PCOD & PCOS are quite similar but at times PCOD are present with same major differences, irregular periods, obesity etc while polycystic ovary syndrome also show similar symptoms along with depression, anxiety and a mood swings .Risk associated with PCOD or PCOS such as infertility where a female might never conceive, diabetes, cardiac issues, endometrial cancer (high chances in PCOS)
Today, there is no as such cure for PCOS or PCOD but few lifestyle changes can be of help in reducing symptoms. In today’s time where Physiotherapy plays an important role in women’s health , approaching a near by physiotherapist can save you preventing future complications, a physiotherapist wil be of great help by providing core strengthening, high intensity interval training (hiit) and many more.
