Thor is an American comic strip superhero performed by writer Stan Lee and artist Jack Kirby for Marvel Comics. Based on the Germanic god of the same name, the character made his debut in Journey into Mystery no. 83. (August 1962). Readers were introduced to the doctor Donald Blake in Thor’s first expedition. Blake discovers an invading army of the Stone Men of Saturn while on vacation in Norway (an alien race later known as Kronans.

When the frightened doctor seeks safety in a nearby cave, he discovers a cane and knocks it against the wall, only to find out that he has been significantly altered. Blake turns into the thunder deity and the rod into the magical hammer Mjolnir. The hammer’s inscription reads, “Whoever bears this hammer if he is worthy shall enjoy the might.

Blake, like Thor, has incredible strength and the ability to fly and manipulate the elements. After being hurled, Mjolnir miraculously returned, but if it was out of grip for more than one minute, Thor reverted to his civilian form as Blake. For the first few years, neither Lee nor Kirby could fit the Thor comic strip into their schedules.

Thus much of the early material was written by Lee’s brother, Larry Lieber. Kirby went on to the new X-Men and Avengers comics after a few issues, but not before adding to supporting cast. Blake went to New York and established practice with a young nurse named Jane Foster, with whom he quickly fell in love.

She had been ignorant of Blake’s alter identity for a long time since exposing such information was severely banned by Thor’s father, Odin, the king of the Norse gods in the faraway realm of Asgard. The strip’s most famous recurrent adversary was Thor’s evil half-brother Loki, the god of mischief.
