How S.T.E.M. Education is Revolutionizing Kids’ Health and the Influence of Technology on Mental Wellbeing of Students

The Indian educational system is in the process of a drastic change like never before.

Moving on from the traditional form of education where knowledge was imparted to students in school and the student’s retention of that knowledge was tested regularly, schools are changing to a holistic approach to education through the S.T.E.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) based teaching methodology.

Schools today, instead of focusing on delivering knowledge to students in an “I give and you receive” way, are now shifting their focus to understanding the learning capability and the overall wellbeing of students. The mental health of students, especially during the lockdown phase of the pandemic, was at an all-time high. With the mental health of students being a concern, nearly all schools adopted preventive measures to make the learning experience of students more accommodating to the situation.

The S.T.E.M. learning methodology focuses on the concept development of four of the core subjects – science, technology, engineering, and mathematics through practical implementation and learning from experience. This form of learning also encourages students to learn about new age skills like coding, robotics, automation, and more, with an emphasis on innovation and technology. With a focus on traditional learning, S.T.E.M. focuses on the practical application of what is taught during class. This form of learning that is proven to be more effective and has a higher retention rate than traditional learning, clubbed with the practical implementation and fun element to it is ideal for students.

S.T.E.M. is a new methodology of learning that is now a mandate for schools to follow. The setting up of labs and incorporating S.T.E.M. learning in the curriculum of all students from a young age is making a revolution in the entire educational system of India. This form of learning, through its approach to learning through experience rather than test-taking, is proven to reduce the stress levels of students to a minimal value.

Students are stressed mostly through overwhelming schoolwork, constant examinations, an expectation to perform well, peer pressure, and more which forms the root of mental health problems. STEM-based learning eradicates most of the leading factors of mental health through its pedagogy of teaching. It is a growing revolution that is surely going to change India’s future very soon.
