Trevor Anderson Brendan Fraser is a Boston volcanologist scheduled to spend ten days with his nephew, Sean Josh Hutcherson. Trevor finds out at work that his brother’s lab is closing due to a lack of financing. Trevor had forgotten entirely about Sean’s impending arrival until he receives a series of texts from Sean’s mother. Sean’s mother leaves Trevor with a box of belongings that formerly belonged to Max, Trevor’s brother, and Sean’s father, who had vanished years earlier. Sean becomes engrossed in Trevor’s words as he tells him about his father, whom he never had the opportunity to meet.
Trevor finds the novel Journey to the Center of the Earth by Jules Verne in the box. Trevor discovers notes written by his late brother within the book. Trevor rushes to his laboratory to investigate the messages further. There, he understands that he must travel to Iceland to conduct his investigation.
He plans to return Sean to his mother, but he relents and takes Sean to Iceland after Sean’s protests. They begin by searching for a new volcanologist. When they arrive at the scientist’s facility, their daughter Hannah Anita Briem is greeted, who informs them that dad is no longer alive. She also tells them that her father and Max both thought Jules Verne’s writings were true stories.
She does, however, offer to assist them in climbing up to the equipment, which has recently resumed transmitting data. A lightning storm drives the three into a cave while trekking the mountain. They have no choice but to walk deeper into the cave, which turns out to be an abandoned mine, when the cave entrance collapses, trapping them.
Trevor, Sean, and Hannah delve deeper down the mine until they reach the “Center of the Earth,” where they fall into a bottomless pit. They all keep going till they come upon a cave where Max used to reside.
